The Master on Information Science (MCI) is the result of adapting to the Bologna Process the Master on Information Logotipo curso Ciência da InformaçãoManagement (MGI), that FEUP has been offering from 1997/98 to 2006/07.
MCI is a joint initiative of the Engineering (FEUP) and Humanities (FLUP) faculties and aims at deepening the knowledge and competences of Information Science graduates towards a professional specialization as well as envisaging a research career.
It also enables graduates from other scientific areas who got approved in at least 30 ECTS credits, corresponding to a minor in an area relevant for Information Science (for instance, Information Management, Archivistic, Library Science), to develop competences towards a professional career in the area of information organization and management.

Objectives

The MCI delivers a solid scientific education and technological training in the information field. It ensures an excellent preparation for the exercise of a profession based on the ability to discover, evaluate, organize, provide access to and preserve information, regardless of its format or support, in different contexts of use.

MCI provides training for professional activities that can be developed within the most diverse organizations, in the public or private sector, through close relationships with potential employers, via dissertations, projects, and other forms of collaboration.

Fields of Specialization

The MCI enables a specialization in three areas
  • Information Management,
  • Data Management and
  • User Experience Management

Professional Abilities

MCI graduates are high-quality professionals with solid technical and social skills in the
field of information management. These skills allow them to solve problems and act in multidisciplinary contexts, work in teams and collaborative environments applying their specific skills, communicate effectively with expert and non-expert audiences, and reflect on the social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge.

Employment Prospects

MCI graduates are information managers. They are prepared for positions in existing information services (in libraries, archives, and documentation services), to integrate teams developing information systems, to conceive new information services (dematerialization, document management, process workflows, collaboration systems, social networks) and ultimately to become Chief Information Officer (CIO) in private and public organizations.
