Admission requirements
1. First degree in History with the minimum final average grade of 14 (grading scale of 0-20).
2. Applicants may also hold a degree with a final average grade lower than 14, as long as relevant experience and/or a professional or equivalent qualification is judged to be sufficient to undertake the programme.
3. A first degree in other areas or a legally equivalent foreign degree, as long as relevant experience and/or a professional or equivalent qualification is judged to be sufficient to undertake the programme.

Course Description
This Postgraduate and Masters course proposes a programme in advanced training in local and regional studies centred on the History of Portugal from a multi-disciplinary perspective, with particular attention paid to the modern period. Considering the tendency in recent times towards the construction of European unity, it seems essential that knowledge on the era preceding this model should be improved. At a local and regional level, economic reasons (cultural tourism), administrative reasons (issues related with the borders of boroughs), the defence and enjoyment of a common heritage (gastronomic, material, written, architectural, artistic, musical, folklore, etc.), all reinforce the need to study local historical events and contexts. It is therefore considered essential that professionals, regardless of their previous academic background, be prepared to recognise, process and study written materials on the issues mentioned above.
Aims

To facilitate a historiographic study of Portuguese identity;

To encourage research on the History of Portugal;

To intervene in areas related with the identification, administration, and the dissemination of written cultural heritage, among town councils and specialised offices;

Qualify/create new professional opportunities.
Structure
The Master’s 1st year comprises curricular seminars and the 2nd year is dedicated to the preparation of a dissertation. The title of Master is awarded after concluding and successfully defending the dissertation.

Career Prospects
The Masters Degree in Local and Regional Studies qualifies the holder to exercise professional activities in the following fields:

Teaching of History in primary and secondary education;

Teaching in higher education;

Cultural management;

Archives and museums;

Historical companies and institutions.
