Phonology I

MLIN02 - ECTS

1) To make students familiar with the main concepts and perspectives of theoretical phonology, with the main landmarks of modern phonology and with the main texts and authors of theoretical and descriptive phonology.

2) To give students the necessary tools and skills to perform phonological analysis.

Language and Cognition

MLIN01 - ECTS

To make students aware of the relation language-cognition and of the cognitive basis of several activities related to language (see Contents).

Language and History

MLIN03 - ECTS The aim of this Seminar is for students to:
- Gain further knowledge of research methods and assumptions in diachronic linguistics;

- Explore the relations and complementarities between synchronic and diachronic linguistics in the analysis of heterogeneity, linguistic variance and change;

- Apply theories and methods related to the study of linguistic variance and change to a few aspects of the historical evolution of the Portuguese language

Topics in Semantics I

MLIN04 - ECTS

1. Acquisition of fundamental knowledge on natural language semantics with a particular emphasis on Portuguese.
2. Reinforcement and development of the semantic reflection on languages so that the students can recognize and identify different kinds of problems. .

Topics in Syntax I

MLIN05 - ECTS

1. Review basic concepts in Syntax; 2. Rethink the Lexicon –Syntax relation from the perspective of recent developments in Generative Grammar; 3. Analyse some structural aspects of simple and complex sentences in Portuguese and in another languages; 4. Analyse sentences that imply reduction or change in the position of some verbal arguments and understand the motivation of movement; 5. Develop methods of observation, regularities searching and generalization based on linguistic data.

Discourse Analysis: Theories and perspectives

MLIN08 - ECTS

Understand the discourse as a sign of the interrelations between language and context.

Understand the discourse as an object  of analysis under specific lingustic methodologies

Develop the textual analytical and production skills.

Phonology II

MLIN09 - ECTS 1. To deepen the students' skills of phonological analysis and description in the broader framework of comparative/typological approaches and according to several theoretical backgrounds.
2. To develop the students' ability of critical assessment of the various phonological descriptions of Portuguese.
3. To train the students' capacity of makng the interface of phonological description with other grammar modules.
4. To enhance the crossdisciplinary approach in order to relate phonology with other scientific disciplines.
5. To free the students' analytic skills from the phonological analysis of one sole language.
6. To make students familiar with different theoretical and methodological approaches, both within the strict scope of phonology and within the domain of the dialogue between phonology and other areas.
7. To develop students' skills to perform independent, advanced work within the field of phonological description of Portuguese and/or other typologically related languages.

History of Grammar Ideas

MLIN12 - ECTS

The main purpose of this seminar is to provide students the theoretical and methodological basis to study, in a historical perspective, metagrammatical texts – with special attention on Portuguese language gammaticography of the 16th, 17th and 18th century. 

Introduction to Forensic Linguistics

MLIN10 - ECTS The student will study specifically applied linguistics in forensic contexts, both as an investigative and an evidential tool, as well as in police interviewing and in court interaction. The student will gain acquaintance with the diverse applications of linguistics in forensic contexts, and will be actively encouraged to conduct practical analyses, in accordance with the corresponding investigative context.

Research Methodology in Language Sciences

MLIN07 - ECTS To support students in order to obtain the adequate methodologies for their Project in Linguistics. In these circumstances this CU will maintain a strong relation with the CU of Project.

Project in Linguistics

MLIN06 - ECTS

To strengthen techniques and methods of research in Linguistics, in collaboration with the CU of Methodology of Research in Sciences of Language. To encourage increasing autonomy, not only in the choice of areas and specific topics, but also in the search for bibliography and information resources and tools. 

Psycholinguistics and Language Learning

MLIN15 - ECTS

To develop students’ critical reasoning so that they can attain better skills as teachers of Portuguese as a Second/Foreign Language, based on the topics dealt with during the seminar sessions.

Questions in Text and Discourse Linguistics

MLIN14 - ECTS 1. Broaden the knowledge on central topics of textual linguistics. 2. Familiarize the student with diverse techniques of textual analysis. 3. Develop a critical perspective. 4. Develop the principles and techniques of academic writing. 5. Develop techniques for oral presentation of a research paper.

Topics in Semantics II

MLIN17 - ECTS

1. To acquaint students with new perspectives on Semantics, taking into particular account the semantic issues raised and the solutions they advocate;

2. To propose (and lead students to propose) well-grounded analyses of semantic aspects of Portuguese, providing them with basic bibliography on these matters;

3. To encourage critical approach towards the theoretical proposals and especially in relation to their application to linguistic data.

Dissertation

MLIN21 - ECTS

To write an original Master’s dissertation in Linguistics.

Supervision Seminar

MLIN20 - ECTS

To supervise and provide students with support in preparing their Master’s dissertation in Linguistics.
