The main purpose of this Curriculum Unit is to provide the opportunity for the PhD student to learn and to perform experimental work with an advanced experimental technique that may be useful in the developing of the work that will be carried out during their PhD thesis. Other objectives are considered, such as increasing the student's experience regarding to the experimental work-plan, and critical analysis of the results obtained.
To achieve this goal the PhD student will need to select the adequate technique, to study its basic theoretical concepts, to learn how to work with the equipment, to carry out the experimental work and do treat and analyse the experimental data.
The execution of an experimental work in this Curricular Unit will provide to the student the necessary skills to work with the selected technique, as well as the capacity to elaborate the experimental design in a critical way and to perform independently its suitability to other specific situations to study.
The expected work for this Curriculum Unit will, mainly, consist in an experimental work. It is expect that during this curriculum unit the PhD students will spend a total of 4 weeks in 1 different lab to learn advanced techniques relevant for their PhD project. The PhD student will be encouraged to identify the technique to be used to study a particularly situation.
During this course, the student will learn to work with at least one laboratory technique (equipment), to perform the experimental work and to process and analyze the experimental data. The student will make a survey of the literature on the theoretical concepts of laboratory technique chosen. The work will be supervised by the competent guidance of technical laboratory chosen and by the advisor of the student's dissertation.

To obtain the frequency, the student will have to prepare a report describing the theoretical study of the technique and the experimental work developed. This report should be sent to the supervisor responsible for the supervision of laboratory work, the doctoral advisor and one of the responsible for the UC.
The final score will be calculated based on the classification assigned by the supervisor of the laboratory technique (20%), the PhD supervisor (20%) and responsible for the UC (60%). The information must be accompanied by a document of the advisors.
It is held in accordance with the ongoing evaluation rules at ICBAS/FFUP for the academic year 2013/2014.
The student may require improvement of classification according to the ICBAS / FFUP rules for the academic year 2013/2014. The final evaluation will be the higher evaluation obtained in the distributed evaluation.
