Programme
The Ph.D. programme is an individual research project. This research project is normally a part of the ongoing research programme of one of FFUP´s research groups; this guarantees the student’s access to world-class researchers and equipment.
Admission Requirements
Individuals who wish to enquire about and/or carry out research as a Ph.D. student at FFUP must submit an informal application to one of the FFUP researchers or to the Faculty Board. In order to be admitted as a Ph.D. student, an applicant shall normally possess a Master's degree.
Structure and Duration
The Ph.D. programme normally requires at least three years of full-time study (a total of 180 ECTS credits). The Ph.D. degree is granted by the Universidade do Porto.
Upon enrolment, an individual research plan is formulated for each candidate. The final plan of studies and full admission must be approved by the Scientific Board of FFUP, twelve months after enrolment. After full admission, the Ph.D. program involves a more intensive research and writing of the dissertation.
While working on the thesis, a student will meet regularly with one or more supervisors for guidance and to assess progress.
Thesis Submission and Examination
Upon completion, the student defends the thesis, publically, before a committee composed of internal members of UP and external, all of which have read the thesis previously.
The award of a Ph.D. is considered proof of competence in the devising and carrying out of a programme of research and requires evidence or originality in thought and critical judgement.
