The project TEC4Growth - Pervasive Intelligence, Enhancers and Proofs of Concept with Industrial Impact, is submitted as coherent effort with roots in the Strategic Programme submitted to FCT and evaluated with the grade of Excellent, and as a logic sequence that was already foreseen in that Programme. We recall that the unifying motto was THE CHALLENGE OF PERVASIVE INTELLIGENCE, addressing systems and technologies. This was deemed as adequate and necessary for an institution with large dimension and rich diversity: an fundamental concept and vision with a comprehensive large scale approach.
The TEC4Growth project addresses the theoretical and fundamental developments required to implement and take advantage of a foreseen predominance of intelligent systems in all sectors of the society. Nonetheless, the identification of specific target application domains has the advantage of bringing about challenges that otherwise would not be perceived, if remaining in a pure abstract approach. Corresponding to the profile of INESC TEC, the whole chain will be investigated: from bits to decisions, from sensing to robotics, from big data to information and knowledge. This initiative mobilizes all 12 Centres of INESC TEC in a coordinated effort to develop socially relevant science. The credibility of such proposal has its anchor in the past performance and very nature of INESC TEC: the institution has displayed an iterated success in promoting multi-disciplinary projects and delivering not only fundamental results but also technologies and solutions.
This distinguishes INESC TEC from a research Unit simply focused on a narrow band of knowledge and specialization.
TEC4Growth is divided into three (3) main Research Lines:
- SMILES - Smart, Mobile, Intelligent and Large scale Sensing and analytics
- FourEyes - Intelligence, Interaction, Immersion and Innovation for media industries
- iMAN - Intelligence for advanced Manufacturing systems

Resumo The project TEC4Growth - Pervasive Intelligence, Enhancers and Proofs of Concept with Industrial Impact, is submitted as coherent effort with roots in the Strategic Programme submitted to FCT and evaluated with the grade of Excellent, and as a logic sequence that was already foreseen in that Programme.
FourEyes targets the media and creative industries, and iMAN targets the manufacturing industries. The challenges of these two environments spread from data collection and analysis through communication, hardware and decision making. SMILES uses the transportation environment as a testbed, but this Research Line is especially focused on IoT (Internet of Things) as an enhancer of the pervasive intelligence concept - therefore, SMILES is not just a project in itself: it decants its advances also onto the other Research Lines. The three Research Lines become therefore intertwined not only from a conceptual point of view but also in the approach and tools - as in both other line the same concept of IoT has its place. Therefore, iMAN and FourEyes will also serve as proofs of concept for developments achieved in SMILES.
Whilst the scientific and technical details of the three Research Lines can be found in the sections of the proposal devoted to each Line, they should not to be seen as three independent isolated efforts. In fact, not only some objectives, tools and methods will be common, but also human resources, from the highly qualified research teams assigned to each Line, will be shared among the Lines. This will thus provide an extremely efficient means of assuring cross-border communication, cooperation and re-use of new developments and solutions.
There is thus a well-defined strategy embedding this proposal, and this includes the model of governance that will assure that the objectives are fully met: objectives of science and objectives of cross-area fertilization and multi-disciplinary convergence. Three highly q |
