Dangerous Situation

If you notice an unusual or potentially dangerous situation for people, equipment and / or environment,warn the Security Guard, personally or through the emergency internal number - #115 (from any extension of the internal network of FEUP) ou +351 912233377.


Medical Emergency


In case of sudden illness or accident call directly 112 (National Emergency Number). The Central Emergency Operator will ask for information about the victim that will allow a fast and efficient rescue and delivery of appropriate means of assistance. After calling 112 please contact the Security Guard - #115 (from any extension of the internal network of FEUP) or 912233377 - in order to take the necessary measures to send FEUP’s rescuers and facilitate access to the ambulance.


Fire

  1. Mantain calm;
  2. Give the alarm - by pressing the emergency button nearest you or by telephoning the emergency internal number - #115 (from any extension of the internal network of FEUP) or +351 912233377;
  3. Arrange for the affected area evacuation ;
  4. Use the nearest fire extinguisher , without any unnecessary risks;
  5. Do not use water to extinguish fires in electrical equipment;
  6. If you cannot extinguish the fire,the area, closing doors and windows;
  7. Use the back of your hand on a door to feel the heat - do not try to open if it is too hot (may be the only obstacle between you and the fire); seek a second way out;
  8. Stay near the floor, it has less smoke and more oxygen;
  9. Do not use the elevator - use the stairs;
  10. If your clothes are on fire , do not run:stop, and roll on the floor.
  11. Go to the meeting point.

Gas Leak

  1. Cut the gasusing the main cutting valve;
  2. Do not connect any electrical appliance , nor switch on the lights;
  3. Ventilate the room , by opening doors and windows;
  4. In case of fire, proceed according to the safety instruction and, if necessary, fight the fire using dry chemical extinguishers;
  5. Never use fire to seek an escape;
  6. Contact Technical and Maintenance Services - 1500 (ext. internal network) - to provide repair and safety inspection.

Flood (water leak)

  1. Turn off the water cutting the appropriate cutting valve or, if necessary, the main cutting valve;
  2. Proceed to the water run-off making, if necessary, barriers in order to forward the water to the nearest floor drain or outwards;
  3. Contact Technical and Maintenance Services - 1500 (ext. internal network) - to provide repair and cleaning.

Earthquake

During an earthquake the main causes for an accident are:

  1. Total or partial collapse of the buildings;
  2. Incorrect human performance due to panic;
  3. Fire, usually aggravated by lack of water and access difficulties;
  4. Fall of furniture and other objects;
  5. Fall of electric power cables.

During an earthquake, proceed as follows:

  1. Maintain calm;
  2. Protect yourself in an inside doorway, on a room corner or under a table or desk.Be aware to the possibility of falling objects; keep a security distance from Windows and glazed objects;
  3. Do not connect any electrical appliance.

After the earthquake:

  1. Before you begin to move through the building protect your head and face;
  2. Do the general cuts of electricity, water and gas ;
  3. Inspect the facilities making the inventory of possible anomalies and losses;
  4. If necessary evacuate the building directing the occupants to the outside, away from buildings or walls, as described in the Evacuation Plan;
  5. Check for injuries and help them; if there are serious injuries do not remove them unless they are in danger - call 112;
  6. In case of fire activate the Emergency Planand proceed according to the safety instructions for operating in case of fire;
  7. Urgently clean flammable products that may have shed;
  8. Turn on a radio and follow the instructions of the Civil Protection and other authorities.

Evacuation

The general evacuation communication of the building is accomplished through a continuous audible alarm, followed by voice communication.

If you hear the alarm, go to the meeting point:

  1. Leave immediately your workplace or classroom ensuring that the equipment under your responsibility are switch off;
  2. Do not delay to collect personal belongings. Avoid taking objects (books, school supplies, coats and bags hamper the evacuation); if you have a laptop close it and take no cables;
  3. Close all the doors and windows;
  4. Do not run or scream, maintain calm;
  5. Use the stairs,never the elevator;
  6. On the stairs, let people pass alternately from the floors below;
  7. Follow the Safety Team instructions;
  8. Guide your visits and help people with limited capabilities or in difficulty;
  9. Do not stop at the exit door of the building; go to the meeting point and remain there until you are given permission to leave or return to the building.

In case of fire be also aware:

  1. Use the back of your hand on a door to feel the heat - do not try to open if it is too hot (may be the only obstacle between you and the fire); seek a second way out;

  3. If your clothes are on fire, do not run: stop, and roll on the floor.

In classroom and/or laboratory, the professor and/or Technical Responsible, during the audible alarm for evacuation must:

  1. Repeat the command in a calm but authoritarian voice, in order to avoid panic;
  2. Open the door and guide the students;
  3. Indicate the meeting point to the students;
  4. Finally, verify that there is nobody in the room/lab, close the door and go to the meeting point, making sure that no student stays behind.

Consult the emergency plans in order to know the evacuation routes if an emergency situation occurs.

How to use the fire extinguisher


  1. Break the seal and pull the safety pin from the handle; press the lever to check the functionality, afterwards go to the place of fire;
  2. Approach to fire in the wind direction or the normal ventilation of the building;
  3. Aim at the base of the fire not the flames; squeeze the lever to discharges the fire extinguishing agent; squeeze the lever slowly and sweep from side to side;
  4. Never direct to a vessel containing a flammable liquid (this can be projected);
  5. In case of fire in electrical and/or electronic equipment, use a CO2fire extinguisher;
  6. When using a CO2fire extinguisher, grab the handle insulator, the part of the cone cools too much and can burn your hands;
  7. Ensure a minimum number of fire extinguishers and people to use them ;
  8. Anticipate the possibility of fire’s reignition;
  9. In the end, contact Technical and Maintenance Services - 1500 (ext. internal network)- to provide fire extinguishers recharge .

How to use the fire blanket

When using a fire blanket please consider:

  1. Remove the blanket from the box by pulling the rings/handles available without removing the box from the wall;
  2. Unfold the blanket and use it:
    • To extinguish a small fire by involving the flames with the blanket;
    • To involve people on fire;
    • As a heat shield to escape from a fire of major proportions.
  3. In the end, if the blanket is still good, fold it and put it back in the respective box ; if not contact Technical and Maintenance Services- 1500 (ext. internal network) - to replace it .
