Objectives

- Acquisition of basic knowledge in the Physics of electromagnetism, optics, and atomic (nuclear) structure (CDIO 1.1.2) and the understanding of its underlaying role in some of the practical uses, appliances and tools.
- Development of personal perseverance and autononomy in study, will to deliver and resourcefulness,  self-awareness of the knowledge in Physics and its integration with Engineering, curiosity and interest in science, especially in Physics (CDIO 2.1.1, 2.4.2, 2.4.4 e 2.4.5).     
- Contribute to the practice in written communication (CDIO 3.2.3) and to an ethical and responsible attitude (CDIO 2.5.1).

Learning outcomes and competences

By the end of this course unit, after observing and studying electromagnetic phenomena (including circuits), light propagation, optics (including optical instruments) and atomic (nuclear) structure,  a student is expected to be able to:
- Enunciate the essencial concepts and laws in these subjects;
- Apply correctly the laws to solve exercises;
- Demostrate a critical attitude towards the methods and results;
- Employ the correct vocabulary;
- Describe and explain the working principles behind practical uses, appliances and tools;
- Explain qualitatively at microscopic level some of the studied/observed phenomena.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Core knowledge in Mechanics (Física I) and Mathematics ( Análise Matemática I e II).

Program

1. Electrostatics: electric field and potenctial: electrostatic energy; capacity; dielectrics.
2. Electric current and direct currrent circuits.
3. Magnetostatics: magnetic field; magnetic forces, magnetic energy, magnetic materials.
4. Magnetic induction. Inductance. Alternating current circuits.
5. Electromagnetic waves and spectrum.
6. Properties and descriptions of light.
7. Geometrical optics. Optical instruments.
8. Interference and difraction.
9. Atomic structure and electromagnetic waves.
10. Nuclear structure and radioactivity.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical/recitation classes (TP): Main contact with the Physics of the syllabus. The main line of work proceeds from phenomenology to the models and corresponding laws of Physics. Experimental demonstrations and their discussion. Resolution of illustrative examples.   

Practical classes (L):  problem solving; experimental activities; distributed evaluation activities.

Eligibility for exams

Eligibility for the exams is attained when the absence rate is below 25%, both in TP and PL classes, in accordance  with the regulations (Normas Gerais de Avaliação).

Calculation formula of final grade

(All grades in the 0-20 points scale.)

Distributed evaluation,  DE (8 points)

T1, T2 -   2 tests in class (summative assessment);  

TM - Moodle tests (formative assessment)

P - Problem solving in group (formative assessment) 

EX - Exam ;  CG - Course unit (final) grade.     

CG = 0,6 * EX + 0,4 * DE
 
Minimum grade in the final exam to pass: 8,0 points in 20.
