Objectives

This course is designed to provide students with the basic skills required for successful computer use and to prepare them to readily work with office software tools: word processing, spreadsheets and presentation tools.

 

Learning outcomes and competences

After finishing succesfully this curricular unit the students should be able to:

(1) Produce documents according to their needs;

(2) Use spreadsheats for for basic data analysis;

(3) Do presentations according to their needs.

Program

Use of electronic office tools, including word processing, spreadsheets and preparing presentations:

  • Word processors and desktop publishing tools: documents types,  text processing using Microsoft Word.
  • Using Microsoft Powerpoint: ways of structuring and building slides, transparencies and electronic presentations;
  • Spreadsheets: Using Microsoft Excel in preparing spreadsheets, and building graphs. Introduction to statistics: descriptive statistics, probability, statistical distributions and population statistics.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes shall comprise the formal explanation of subject-matter, with the use of transparencies, computer presentations and demonstrations with a video projector, followed by the presentation of examples and subsequent discussion. Practical classes include resolving exercises and preparing practical assignments.

Eligibility for exams

A student enrolled obtains frequency if not exceeds the absence limit legally established and obtains a minimum of 10 (ten) in the final, and can not be less than 30% (6 out of 20) in any of the evaluation components.

Calculation formula of final grade


Freq = (Test1+Test2)/2, if Test1>= 6,0 and Test2 >= 6,0

 

Final Grade = (Freq+Exam)/2; if Freq >= 6,0 and Exam >= 6,0


Test1 and Test2 represent the grade attained in the first and second test, respectively.

The Exam's grade is the best grade chosen between any of the exams.

Examinations or Special Assignments

There are no special tests or assignments. 

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

For students enrolled under special regimes, the attendance of practical classes is not compulsory. Those students have the same opportunities for evaluation as any other student.

Classification improvement

Only the final exam grade may be improved.
