Objectives

This course aims at providing multidisciplinary transversal competences that are relevant to PhD Students and Researchers performance, by providing tools to articulate different types of skills and empowering the ability to transfer academic skills to non-academic contexts.

Seminars comprise two main activity types:

  1. Attending training courses offered by FEUP under the program Transferable Skills for Engineering (TSE) (4.5 ECTS);
  2. Report on a research subject proposed by a student supervisor or tutor in a topic of interest for the student future research work. (3 ECTS)

Courses offered by the TSE program:

  • MIC - Scientific research methodology (1.5 ECTS)
  • PECient - Publication and scientific writing (3 ECTS)
  • CCANE - Science Communication for non-experts (1.5 ECTS)
  • FP - Pedagogical training/basic teaching skills to teach in higher education (1.5 ECTS)
  • CATA – Assertive communication and presentation techniques (advanced module) (1.5 ECTS)
  • GTOP - Time management and personal organization (advanced module) (1.5 ECTS)
  • LaTeX (1.5 ECTS)
  • PICN - From intellectual property to Business creation (3 ECTS)

NB: Not all courses are offered in both semesters. The student should contact the Learning and Teaching Laboratory (LEA - Laboratório de Ensino Aprendizagem, in Portuguese) lea@fe.up.pt, to obtain further information.

The research work referred in point 2 should be validated by the student supervisor and by the Seminars coordinator.

The students need to complete 4.5 ECTS for the TSE courses. Together with the selected training courses on TSE the students need to carry out work equivalent to 3.0 ECTS with a supervisor or tutor in a topic of interest for the student future research work.

Program

Program and General Information

Work guided by supervisor/tutor - 3.0 ECTS

  • The students of Seminars are credited with 3.0 ECTS (3.0 ECTS corresponds approximately to 84 hours of work) corresponding to a work supervised by a tutor or Ph.D. supervisor. For this purpose, students are required to submit a proposal of work plan, with a title, name of student and tutor/supervisor, summary of the work and the work plan itself. The document to be submitted using the course web page, cannot exceed one A4 page.
  • The deadline to submit the proposal: defined in each semester (see Moodle).
  • The deadline to submit the report: defined in each semester (see Moodle).
  • The program depends on the work developed.

TSE Courses: 1.5 or 3 ECTS (see more details below)

  • TSE Registration: contact lea@fe.up.pt
  • The program depends on the TSE course

Modules

_____________________________________________

  • Transferable Skills for Engineering: from intellectual property to business creation  (3 ECTS)

To develop entrepreneurial skills; provides opportunities for the development of comprehensive knowledge of intellectual property and the development of a business model for the technological entrepreneurship context.

 _____________________________________________

  • Transferable skills for Engineering: pedagogical training (PED)  (1,5ECTS)

To develop pedagogical skills for PhD students involved in teaching activities or planning to be involved in the future teaching activities in Higher Education

_____________________________________________

  • Assertive communication and presentation techniques (1,5ECTS)

Training doctoral students on assertive communication skills and their ability to make effective presentations

 _____________________________________________

  • Time management and personal organization (1,5ECTS)

To enable participants to effectively develop research and enhance productivity while remaining psychologically coherent/resilient to the intellectual and emotional aspects they face in the course of research.

 _____________________________________________

  • Transversal Skills for Engineering: methods of scientific research   (1,5ECTS)

Participants will be able to tailor the best scientific research methodology and data analysis to each of their specific fields of application.

_____________________________________________

  • Transferable Skills for Engineering: Scientific Publication and Writing   (3 ECTS)

It allows participants to publish more successful articles through a more systematic writing and the most appropriate choice of journal in terms of content and impact in the scientific community. In addition to writing and choosing the journal, students will also be competent in reviewing and correcting articles.

_____________________________________________

  •  Transversal Skills for Engineering: Science communication for non-experts  (1.5ECTS)

Communicating science to a non-specialist audience requires a very different set of competencies than giving a successful lecture at a specialty conference, or exchanging impressions with peers, even from different expertise. This course provides the development of a specific set of skills and a systematic methodology, so that young engineers and scientists can improve the effectiveness of their communication and avoid spreading distorted ideas. It also aims to enable participants to acquire/develop skills that allow them to articulate their research in a discourse that is convincing and accessible to a non-scientific audience.

_____________________________________________

  • Transversal Skills for Engineering: Latex  (1,5 ECTS)

To provide opportunities for the acquisition and development of skills in LATEX Document Preparation System: a useful tool for the production of mathematical and scientific texts, due to its high typographic quality, which can also be used to produce personal documents, articles, books, theses, among others.
