Objectives

This curricular unit (UC) aims at providing extended knowledge of the state-of-the-art in the research of Ubiquitous Embedded Systems (UES), covering the use of platforms with very limited computational and communication resources, their interconnection in wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSN / WSAN) and their integration in the Internet-of-Things (IoT).

It is expected that the students of this UC will acquire the competences needed to identify current problems in the field of UES, based on a critical view of the solutions existing in the literature.

Learning outcomes and competences

As learning outcomes, the students are expected to develop the following competences:

- Capacity too carry out searches of specific information in the field of UES

- Understanding of the differentiating features of UES e the respective architectures and platforms used

- Capacity to identify and characterize the different types of UES, namely WSN, WSAN and IoT

- Capacity to design UES for different applications, making us of adequate tools for their specification, modeling and analysis.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Concepts of: concurrency and multi-tasking kernels, electronics and energy consumption, mesh networks and communication protocols, middleware

Comments from the literature

The referred books are mandatory but only partially, since just some chapters of each are used

Teaching methods and learning activities

This UC relies on lectures and invited seminars on current related research topics. The lectures will adopt an interactive model, exploring aspects that can potentially trigger discussion.
