This curricular unit (UC) aims at providing extended knowledge of the state-of-the-art in the research of Ubiquitous Embedded Systems (UES), covering the use of platforms with very limited computational and communication resources, their interconnection in wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSN / WSAN) and their integration in the Internet-of-Things (IoT).

It is expected that the students of this UC will acquire the competences needed to identify current problems in the field of UES, based on a critical view of the solutions existing in the literature.

Learning outcomes and competences

As learning outcomes, the students are expected to develop the following competences:

- Capacity too carry out searches of specific information in the field of UES

- Understanding of the differentiating features of UES e the respective architectures and platforms used

- Capacity to identify and characterize the different types of UES, namely WSN, WSAN and IoT

- Capacity to design UES for different applications, making us of adequate tools for their specification, modeling and analysis.

Eligibility for exams

Attending a minimum of 8 lectures

Calculation formula of final grade

Two written critiques of recent related research papers (40% each) plus the answers to quizzes (minimum 4) taken along the semester (20% total).

Assessment criteria:

- Written critiques: summary, contribution, understanding of the technical issues, identification of strong and weak points

- Answers to the quizzes: technical accuracy, assertivity and conciseness


Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)


Classification improvement

Written Recourse exam, covering all the topics taught in the UC, plus the oral presentation of a proposed topic
