In the Mobile Communications course are discussed the fundamental aspects of the behaviour of wireless nertworks, the relevant wireless technologies, and techniques required to design  wireless networks.

Learning outcomes and competences

The student should be able to: a) describe and discuss techniques used to transmit data on a wireless connection; b) describe and discuss techniques used in the design of communication networks on a wireless connection; c) describe and discuss techniques used to manage mobility of mobile stations; d) describe and compare the most used mobile communication networks with respect to techniques and architecture studied; f) assess  the performance of prototypes of techniques studied; g) discuss scenarios of evolution of mobile communications.

Working method


Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Frequência of Redes de Computadores.


1. Characteristics of a mobile communication system: applications; history; normalization; reference models; frequency allocation.
2. Wireless transmission: models of signal propagation; modulations; codifications; adaptative techniques.
3. Wireless data links: multiplexing techniques, duplex techniques; ARQ techniques; multiple access techniques; radio link control.
4. Networks over wireless links and network architectures: review of important concepts (level 2 vs. level 3; tunnels; data and control planes; IPv6); MIPv6; reference models and architectures for radio access networks.
5. Wireless IEEE networks: 802.11 (WLAN), 802.15 (WPAN), 802.16 (WMAN).
6. Wireless mesh networks.
7. Wireless telecommunication networks: GSM, GPRS, UMTS and LTE.
8. Mobility management: models; case studies of 3GPP, IEEE and  IETF networks.

Teaching methods and learning activities

This course unit is based on two types of classes- theoretical and laboratory. In theoretical classes students will be familiar with the themes of the course unit and materials to study. Laboratory classes will be used by students to be acquainted with aspects related to the design of wireless communication networks.

Eligibility for exams

Admission to exams (Frequência) is obtained by executing homeworks and laboratory works. The student shall get a grade not less than 8,0 valores.

L - Grade of laboratory works

E - Exam



CF = 0,4*FQ + 0,6*E

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Special students shall also get a grade for Frequência (FQ) and a grade for Exam (E). The method to be used to obtain the Frequencia grade shall be discussed with the professor. The special student shall contact the professor during the first two weeks; if not, the professor will assume that this student is a regular student.

Classification improvement

The grade of Frequência (FQ) is considered in the Época de Recurso. Only the Exame (E) component can be improved in the Época de Recurso.
