The learning outcomes consist in developing: the capacity for structured knowledge in a scientific area; the competencies, abilities and research methods associated to a scientific domain; the capacity for conceiving, designing, adapting and carrying out a significant research work, complying with high academic standards of quality and integrity.
It is also expected that students acquire competencies for critically analyse, assess and synthesise complex new ideas and for communicating with their peers, the academic community at large and the society in general about their area of expertise.
Elaboration of the state of the art relative to the theme of the thesis
Production of a significant volume of original research work that contributes to enlarge the frontiers of knowledge and part of which reaches the standard required for national or international dissemination in peer reviewed journals.
Preparation of an original dissertation.
Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit objectives.
The syllabus, adequately adapted to each individual student, culminates with the production of an original dissertation that contributes to the advancement of science, which is the main objective to be fulfilled by the curricular unit.
The work involves sessions for discussion of the thesis topics and for monitoring the progress achieved. The thesis is defended in a public session with a board of examiners comprising the Rector, at least three PhD holders and the supervisor and co-supervisor(if any).
Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes.
The specific nature of this curricular unit, with a significant component of individual and original work, demands a teaching methodology that promotes recurrent discussion of the subjects involved and monitoring of the progress achieved.
