Objectives

Understand key concepts in scientific research, namely in the outlining and development of a research plan in Transport. This course aims to improve the students’ skills in identifying the subjects to be studied, in formulating new hypotheses, and  also in the disclosure of the research results in a rigorous and effective way.

Learning outcomes and competences

Outlining and managing a research plan; selecting adequate scientific methodologies to address the research problems; developing new formulations and solutions supported by those methods.

A report on the state of the art has to be written and a bibliographic research on the theme of the chosen PhD has to be carried out. A preliminary plan on the thesis has to be presented.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:

The knowledge on research methodologies and techniques is essential to the development of a PhD, namely in the Transport area.

A bibliografia será selecionada pelo estudante, em função do trabalho a desenvolver.; Main references on the subject of the report selected by the student.

Teaching methods and learning activities

This course includes lecture sessions and  discussion sessions. The grading will be based on an assignment report and on a written exam, when necessary.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The assignment report and the discussion of the preliminary thesis plan allows for an efficient learning experience at this education level.
