The objectives of this course are related with the need to provide students with advanced knowledge on the biogeophysical qualities of urban and metropolitan areas, and understanding of the specific role of planning in environmental quality improvement and ecosystem balance. The critical capacities of observation, analysis and interpretation of the urban phenomena, as well as of diagnosis and prescription of urban pathologies and environmental conflicts will also be developed.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES.
The classes:principal objectives are to present the main themes of the Course Programme, illustrated with a discussion of case examples covering relevant national and European experiences, followed by practical discussions organized around selected case studies. The evaluation will be based on students' participation in presentations and debates throughout the semester completed by preparing and defending an essay on a topic chosen from a list of themes introduced by the lecturer and later worked out and further focused by the student. The essay will be structured and formatted following the general guidelines set for a scientific article.
DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The discussions approach in the classroom coupled with comparative case study analysis provides an adequate learning environment to address the course objectives.
