Objectives
Understand the fundamentals associated with reliability analysis of geotechnical structures. Understand the concept of risk and which tools are available for risk analysis. Understand the Eurocodes design basis.
Learning outcomes and competences
Perform reliability analysis of geotechnical problems with reduced mathematical complexity. Use risk analysis tools for the study of geotechnical problems.

Fundamental concepts. Definition of the aims and scope of the course unit. Uncertainty and risk in geotechnical engineering; probability.Reliability analysis and error propagation; First Order Second Moment (FOSM) methods; the Hasofer-Lind Approach (FORM; Monte Carlo simulation methods.Risk, decisions and judgment; Risk identification (event tree analysis, fault tree analysis, triggering events, consequence evaluation, etc;); Risk quantification. Geotechnical risk. Expert systems; Observational method: application during the design, development and exploration stage.
DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:
The study and discussion of the theoretical concepts associated with the final coursework, applying the learnt concepts, enables the achievement of the objectives. This coursework allows a practical demonstration of the obtained skills.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Teaching involves sessions with theoretical presentations and discussions (10 sessions x 1.5h). A coursework using the methodologies presented for risk analysis is proposed to the student. Preferably, this coursework should be focused on the area of the student thesis.Grading will be based on a written examination (60%) and on the coursework (40%).
DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The report assignment and the discussion of the UC contents allows for an efficient learning experience at this education level.
