To apply the theorems and methods and principles of limit analysis of structures under various actions. Scale reticulated frame structures and to estimate the generalized displacements in the reference sections. Understand the concept and use of ductility factors.
Use regulations for analysis and design of plastic structures, in addition to automatic calculation programs in structural analysis, for understanding the analysis results and the design principles.
Introduction: Analysis and dimensioning methods (project); Limit analysis: Theorem of limit analysis, limit analysis methods, combination of independent mechanisms, equilibrium method and moment distribution (advantages and disadvantages), applications to reticulated structures. Dimensioning (project) by minimum weight requirement: empirical method, non-linear and linear theories, geometrical analogy, minimum weight theorem (Foulke’s theorem), applications to reticulated structures; Inelastic deformation analysis: estimation of step-by-step displacement and imminent collapse (by using inclination equations and static line displacement or virtual works theorem); Dimensioning of reticulated structures using deformation control.
DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:
The implementation of analytical and numerical examples and the application of programs for automatic calculation based on matrix analysis of structure, enable the achievement of the objectives. Also, the realization of a small design case will strengthen the application of design regulations for this type of structures.
The teaching involves sessions with theoretical presentations and discussions. The student grading will be based upon small application exercises and a report assignment, and also a written exam if necessary.
DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The report assignment and the discussion of the theoretical issues of this UC contents and their numerical examples, allows an efficient learning experience at this level of postgraduate education.
