Objectives

This course deals with the conception and design of bridges and their construction methods, construction quality control, monitoring, inspection, rehabilitation and reinforcement of Bridges and Large Span Structures.

I – Large span structures: a) History and evolution of structural materials; b) Portuguese and international examples;
II- Actions: a) Dimensioning philosophies; Dimensioning codes; Eurocode 1; b) Actions of trains, pedestrian and bicycles; c) Hydrodynamic actions; d) Temperature action; e) Wind action; f) Seismic action;
III- Economy, aesthetics and social responsibility
IV- Big bridges: a) slender pillars; b) beam bridges; c) arch bridges; d) cable-stayed bridges; e) suspended bridges;
IV- Coverings of large halls

DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:

This course applies previous acquired knowledge to the special case of bridges. Therefore, emphasis is given to synthesis, although analytical skills are further developed since specific concepts and methodologies mostly relevant for bridges are also taught.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching involves sessions for theoretical presentations and for discussion. The assessment will be made throughout a report evaluation and an examination if necessary.

The elaboration of the report and the discussion of UC contents allows an efficient learning at this education level.
