Acquisition of technical and scientific knowledge in the field of Materials Pathology (stone and concrete), particularly the characterization of the properties that more directly are related with their deterioration, the study of the mechanisms and agents of deterioration, the characterization of the main degradations and the study of the methods and techniques for prevention, protection and repair.
.
Introduction. Means and techniques to support the diagnosis.
Stone pathology. Properties of rocks. Aggressive agents and their action. Main types of deterioration. Location of the damage in buildings. Mechanisms responsible for the genesis of deterioration. Cleaning, conservation and protection treatments.
Concrete pathology. Main symptoms and causes of degradation in a concrete structure, environmental exposure. Physical, chemical and biological processes of degradation. Corrosion of reinforcement. Prevention. Protection.
DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:
The theoretical presentations, discussions as well as the study and field visits allow the students to carry out a diagnosis and a proposal for intervention in the domains of Stone and Concrete Pathology.
The teaching involves sessions with theoretical presentations, discussions as well as study and field visits. The student grading will be based on a written exam and a report assignment if necessary.
DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The exame, the eventual report assignment and the discussion and study and field visitsof the UC contents allows for an efficient learning experience at this education level.
