Objectives
In this course unit each student has to carry out research work leading to the preparation of a scientific dissertation on a subject in a domain area of the course. The dissertation must be specially made for this purpose, constituting a privileged moment to demonstrate the scientific competence of the student, formalized at the end of the fourth semester. The research should involve components of a theoretical nature and/or experimental, promoting understanding and problem solving in new and unfamiliar situations, the selection and careful collection of information and appropriate literature, the adoption of appropriate methodologies, design of a solution to the proposed problem and its implementation, and critical analysis of the obtained results. The dissertation must demonstrate that the candidate is an expert on the area of the research and must also demonstrate that he/she acquired knowledge in the frontiers of knowledge in the area of the dissertation.
Learning outcomes and competences
Integration of knowledge and critical evaluation skills to perform research and development work of theoretical nature and/or experimental on a specific subject area of the course, which culminates in the presentation and public defense of a dissertation that reports clearly the work done and its main results.

Program
Each student will have at least one academic supervisor at FEUP and may also have an external supervisor (for example when the thesis is carried out in an academic-enterprise environment). The student will have an individual work program in the domain of the master course, which is defined together with the supervisor(s).

Teaching methods and learning activities
Each student must conduct individual research and development work supervised by the advisor(s). The work can be carried out in academic or academic/enterprise environment. The main tasks of the research work include the formulation of the problem, the study of appropriate methodologies and a literature review to address the problem to solve, the development and design of a solution to the problem, a critical analysis of the obtained results, and conclusions.
Evaluation Type
Distributed evaluation without final exam

Calculation formula of final grade
The final assessment is performed at the end of the thesis defense session by a jury, which is composed by (at least) the director of the study cycle or a member of the scientific committee, a member external to FEUP, and the supervisor(s). The thesis defense is a public session and includes a presentation of the work, followed by a discussion period. The final grade decided by the jury is obtained according to the following components: 50% - quality of the work performed by the student; 30% - quality of the written report (dissertation); 20% - presentation and discussion in the public thesis defense session.
