The intention of this course that the students acquire knowledge on: a) the concepts, services and multimedia applications and hypermedia, b) coding techniques and representation of multimedia information, c) networks and protocols relevant to multimedia d) the requirements of quality of service of various mediaquality of service requirements and how they can be met.

Learning outcomes and competences

As a result of this course it is intended that students acquire theoretical knowledge about the media in general, standardized coding of image, video and audio, as well as on transmission of multimedia content via communications networks.

Working method



Introduction to multimedia - definition, types of media, basic technologies. The multimedia PC. Computer networks. Circuit switching and packet. LANs / MANs, WANs. OSI and TCP/IP reference model.  Ethernet and Wi-fi. Protocols of the TCP/IP architecture. Multimedia applications - classification of multimedia applications, hypertext and hypermedia, CSCW. Information image and video - color systems, conversion between color systems, spatial and temporal resolution. Compression techniques, JPEG, MPEG, MPEG2, MPEG4. Audio digital encoding / compression MPEGaudio, symbolic representation of music. Network requirements of multimedia applications - performance parameters, requirements of various media. IPTV.
