Objectives

The main objective of this course is to give an insight into the digital culture, addressing the history of electronic music and Multimedia and focus on the multimedia trends.

The Digital Culture curriculum aims to provide students with a broad overview on the impact of digital technology on society and culture, providing mechanisms to analise and reflect on how to establish a critical thinking.

The module on the History of Electronic Music and Multimedia seeks to give an insight into how technological developments in this area forged a new audio culture. Thus it also seeks to promote a critical thinking on the cultural impact of the technological advabces in the field of multimedia.

Finally the module on the Multimedia Trends aims to promote critical thinking about how some of the emerging topics in Multimedia may evolve in the future.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the course students should be able to:

1. Discuss the impact of digital technology on society and culture;

2. Identify and describe the major events in the history of electronic music and Multimedia;

3. Identify the main Multimedia trends and debate their consequences.

e) the invention of recording and early electronic music examples;

h) algorithmic composition;
i) digital / computer music;

k) the 'soundscape' concept.

3) Trends of Multimedia:
a) Advanced topics in the research area of Multimedia and Digital Media.

Teaching methods and learning activities

This course unit is composed by both comprehensive seminars and experimental situations. The former present three fundamental axis of the history of multimedia. The latter enable the analysis and debate over the current trends of multimedia.

Observations

Classes will be taught in English if there is foreign students or if it is deemed necessary (e.g. presentations given by foreign professors). Students can either present their assignments in Portuguese or in English.
