Background Environmental is an important topic for knowledge in engineering. The environmental evaluation of industrial processes and products is esential to evaluate the environmental sustainability. These concepts are made available to students in this course of MIEMM allowing them to recognize the environemmtal damage associated to industrial operations and products and apply these concepts to reduce environmental problems.
Objectives Introduction to relevant concepts of environmental engineering. The students identifies and evaluates the environmental damage od processes and products.
Skills and learning outcomes -To identify the fundamental concepts of environmental management (natural resources, gas emissions, liquid effluents and solid wastes). - To enhance the access to bibliographic resources at FEUP and other places, including databases and other types of information available on the Internet, namely the ones offered by environment agencies. - To apply concepts in the identification of environmental problems related to a company, industrial sector or a given product. - To assess the environmental performance and identify the better measures and techniques to improve it.
Definition of Environment and Environmental Management. General concepts about environment. Environmental concerns. Environmental legislation. Environmental licensing. Integrated pollution prevention and control (MTD). Characteristics of wastewater treatment. Air quality management. Types of wastes. Environmental management in organizations. Identification and evaluation of environmental problems associated to an activity. Introduction to environmental management tools (ISO 14001). Life cycle assessment (ISO 14040). The sustainability concept.
Presentation of the themes of the course unit under a conceptual approach but using, whenever possible, examples of application. Development of a bibliographic research assignment, to be carried out in phases, plus an oral presentation. A study visit to a company (date yet to be set), in order to show students the fundamental concepts and methods regarding environmental management. Elaboration of a visit report.
