Objectives

To achieve a qualitative approach of the basics and methods that should support interventions on stone masonry structures, with particular emphasys on ancient buildings. Furthermore, it is sought a global overview of structural analysis methods suitable for this type of structures as well as of the relevant safety assessment procedures.

Program

1. Construction and structural systems of ancient stone masonry buildings
2. Damages in stone masonry structures
3. Interventions in the ancient built heritage
4. Solutions for strengthening and retrofitting ancient structures
5. Analysis methods and safety assessment

DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:

Understanding the correct way of interventing in stone masonry ancient buildings requires the basic knowledge of the construction systems of old structures, as addressed in topic 1 of syllabus, and an adequate perception of damages they are prone to, as described in topic 2.
The intervention on ancient built heritage should be done according to specific procedures addressed in topics 3 and 4, which also include the presentation and discussion of strengthening and/or retrofitting techniques whose adoption should be supported by appropriate analysis and safety assessment methods presented in topic 5.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching involves sessions with theoretical presentations and discussions. The student grading will be based on a report assignment and a written exam if necessary.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The report assignment and the discussion of the UC contents allows for an efficient learning experience at this education level.
