Suitable for English-speaking students

Objectives

To be capable of using certain pre-selected statistical techniques in students’ area of specialization and to be able to comunicate with other members of a working team when approaching problems of the type involving these techniques

Learning outcomes and competences

Being able to conduct a regression analysis and build a model for this method;

Being able to build samples, static or dynamic, with no known law or by re-sampling

Being able to conduct a brief analysis of a time series and work with a simplified model

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Basic knowledge of Probability and Statistics

Program

Regression analysis (univariate and multivariate) Sample simulation and construction (sample construction by random generation and resampling) Temporal series

DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The study of the selected subjects enables the approach to a large number of problems that emerge in the civil engineering research.

Mandatory literature

Douglas C. Montgomery, George C. Runger; Applied Statistics and Probability for Engineers. ISBN: 0-471-17027-5
Bento J. F. Murteira, Daniel A. Muller, K. Feridun Turkman; Análise de sucessões cronológicas. ISBN: 972-9241-32-5

Complementary Bibliography

Reuven Y. Rubinstein; Simulation and the Monte Carlo method. ISBN: 0-471-08917-6

Teaching methods and learning activities

Presentation and supervision of assignments. Evaluation along the semester concluded by a final oral exam.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The report assignment and the discussion of the UC contents allows for an efficient learning experience at this education level. The student will be oriented to develop in more detail those subjects that have more impact  on his/her field of specialization.
