This course aims to provide information about: the constitution, design and behaviour of landfills; the valorization of waste in geotechnical works.
- advanced engineering fundamental knowledge
- engineering reasoning and problem solving
- experimentation and knowledge discovery
- designing
Composition of solid wastes. Selection andsite management. Liner and drainage systems: constitution and operation demands; natural and synthetic materials; design and execution methodologies; materials identification and quality control. Wastes: physical, mechanical and hydraulic characterization; laboratory and field tests; pre-treatment methods; stabilization and deposition; global stability; methodologies of analysis; seismic behaviour. Monitoring and control behaviour. Landfill biochemistry. Leachate pollution control. Landfill rehabilition.
Waste valorization in Geotechnics: current situation of waste valorization; legislative and normative framework for valorization of waste in Geotechnics.
Valorization in geotechnical works of waste from: quarrying, steel slag, tires, construction and demolition; bottom ashes from incineration of municipal solid waste
DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:
The environmental sustainability of construction demands knowledge of the fundamental properties of the waste in order to develop proper design methodologies for landfills and to predict long term behaviour of these environmental structures. On the other hand, the valorization of waste in construction, and in particular in Geotechnics, is a matter of utmost relevance and interest in the environmental sustainability of construction.
The teaching involves sessions with theoretical presentations and discussions. The student grading will be based on a report assignment and a written exam if necessary.
DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The report assignment and the discussion of the CU contents allows for an efficient learning experience at this education level.
