The objectives of the course are as follows:
1. acquistion and demonstration of knowledge regarding the structure and operation of the power sector in terms of markets, both regarding theretical and computational models as well as knowledge regardin Quality of Service in the electricity sector (CDIO skills 1.1, 1.4, 2.1, 2.3);
2. demonstration ofthe capacity to treat, validate and interpret results obtained in practical assignments(CDIO skills 2.1, 2.3);
3. development of capacities related with autonomous work and bibliographic search (CDIO skills 2.4, 2.5 e 3.3);
4. demonstration of capacities to integrate and perform team work and capacity to plan work together with other colleagues (skills CDIO 2.4, 2.5 e 3.1);
5. development and demonstration of capacities regarding the preparation of written reports and delivery of oral presentations (skills CDIO 3.2);
6. demonstration of understanding of the external, entrepreneurial and commercial environments in which the lectricity sector is currently evolving (skills CDIO 4.1, 4.2);
7. demonstration of capacities to set objectives and manage projects (skills CDIO 4.3 e 4.6).

Learning outcomes and competences

The students should obtain or develop a set of skills and knowledge regarding the electricity sector structured in terms of markets, as well as several aspects related with Quality of Service. We also aim that the students develop autonomous work capabilities, to perform bibliographic research and to prepare and deliver oral presentations.

Program

The program of the discipline includes the following topics:
- Introductory aspects and distinction between operation planning and expansion planning problems;
- Introduction to the electricity markets - pool, bilateral contracts and mixed systems;
- International evolution and European Directives;
- Newtork services - methods to allocate network costs;
- The National Electricity System and introduction to the national tariff system;
- General aspects regarding Quality of Service - Continuity, Commecial Quality and Quality of the Wave;
- Quality of Service regulation in Portugal mainland.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Teaching is based in three components:
- theoretical classes to present topics related with the program of the discipline acompanied whenever possible with the presentation and discussion of practical situations;
- practical classes that will be mainly used for the students to work on the practical assignment and to clarify doubts regarding this assignment. When necessary part of these classes can be used to highlight concepts of particular topics related with that assignment. At the end of the semester, the students will deliver a written report on the performed work;
- presentation by each gropu of students (maximum duration of 15 min) regarding the results obtained in a bibliographic research on the market structure in force in the electricity sectot of a country or geographical area.

Eligibility for exams

The components of the avaluation are as follows:
- practical assignment and written report (PA);
- oral presentation with the maximum duration of 15 min on the market structure in force in the electricity sectot of a country or geographical area (ORALP);
- final exam (FE).
Frequency will be attained if the following conditions are obtained simultaneously:
- minimum classification of 8 (out of 20) in FE;
- written report of the practical assignment delivered within the established period;
- oral presentation delivered when schedulled.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final classification will be obtained as follows:

0,25xPA+0,15xORALP+0,6xFE

where PA, ORALA and FE stand for the marks out of 20 obtained for the Practical Assignment, the Oral Presentation and the Final Exam.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Final exam and written report about the practical assignment.

Classification improvement

New exam to improve the classification obtained in the Final Exam.
