Objectives

The course aims to develop students’ interest in and knowledge and understanding of tools and methods for distribution system study . The module addresses in depth reliability models, risk analysis and compromise seeking among several planning objectives, namely investment, security, quality of service of distribution systems . Learning Outcomes: Students will develop knowledge and understanding of: -undamental concepts, principles and mathematical theories used for decision in an environment contaminated with uncertainty -methods to evaluate indices to study the goodness or acceptability of decisions -undamental concepts and principles of risk analysis and distribution system reliability - distribution system planning - substation design They will acquire intellectual and practical skills to: - develop appropriate models of scenario building and criteria representation for distribution system planning - evaluate decisions under the paradigm of risk analysis - use multiple criteria concepts in evaluating solutions - write a technical report based on performed studies (Skills CDIO- Conceiving — Designing — Implementing — Operating-1.2,1.4,2.3,2.5,3.2,3.3,4.2,4.3,4.4 e 4.6)

Learning outcomes and competences

The programmatic contents were chosen to enable a gradual and continuous learning to acquire knowledge in this Curricular Unit (CU) in order to achieve these objectives.
With the aim of promoting a stronger and sustained learning of the programmatic contents indicated, were carried out several meetings with all teachers from this academic year to evaluate the theoretical framework of scientific and other CU's course in relation to this. Thus, it is expected that the learning of content areas is gradual and sustained in prior knowledge and competences in pre-acquired by the students.
The depth at which the contents will be taught and the teaching contact hours, divided between "theoretical" (T) and "Practice and Laboratory (PL) were adjusted to this CU.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

The frequency of this UC requires skills taught in the UCs:

Electromagnetism

Probability and Statistics

Electrical Power Systems

It is the student responsibility to ensure mastery of the topics covered in this UCs.

Program

- The supply system - Generation, transmission and distribution - The distribution system - Supply requirements - Network configurations - Planning distribution networks - Planning objectives -Reliability -General -Basic Reliability theory (the general reliability function, the exponential distribution, mean time to failure, Markov process, series and parallel system) - Distribution Reliability Indices. - Reliability investment appraisal - Equipment (transformers, overhead lines, underground cables, switchgear) - MV networks - Principles for determining circuit dimensions - Operational aspects (network arrangement, load transfer schemes, optimum location of protective equipment and switching devices)
