Objectives

The main aim of this course unit is to demonstrate some biotechnological processes, which were studied in other course units.
Students will be asked to carry out practical assignments and they should base their projects on the concepts acquired on Fermentation Engineering and Enzymatic Engineering.
Since this course unit is a laboratory-oriented course, students will be mainly assessed based on reports. Their performance during classes will also be taken into account in the assessment.
Students will be asked to carry out six practical assignments (group) and they have to write a report about them (5 group reports and 1 individual).

Program

1. Assessment of the growth of simple and mixed microbial populations (Pseudomonas fluorescens e Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and characterization of kinetic parameters.
2. Study of aeration and agitation in tanks – kLa value to several conditions by dynamic and chemical methods.
3. Determination of invertase kinetic constants in free cells and immobilized in alginate.
4. Demonstration of the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in chemostat- study of the effect of dilution rate
5. Obtaining G-penicillin by fed-batch operation and determination of its concentration using a biosensor.
6. Open project (mathematical simulation of a biological process).
7. Proposal and assessment of alternatives of the assignments

Teaching methods and learning activities

Classes will be based on the formal presentation of some theoretical concepts and experimental methodologies.
Students will be asked to carry out laboratory assignments: characterization of the mode of operation of bioreactors with examples of processes of production and purification of bio-products.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Description Type Time (hours) Weight (%) End date
Attendance (estimated) Participação presencial 0,00
Total: - 0,00

Calculation formula of final grade

Final Grade will be based on the following assessment components:
Reports of the experimental assignments – 45% of the final grade
Individual report of one experimental assignment – 25% of the final grade
Presentation of the report of one experimental assignment – 5% of the final grade
Continuous Assessment- students’ performance during classes- 25% of the final grade

To complete the course unit, students have to reach a minimum grade of 9.5. Besides, they cannot miss more classes than allowed by the rules.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students with a special status have to do the assignments and deliver them on the same date as regular students. All students will be assessed in the same way.

Classification improvement

Students can improve their grades by attending a laboratory exam which will be based on an assignment to be defined by the professor. Also, students have to write a report and give a presentation about the assignment.
