Objectives
Introduction to elastic structural mechanics. Introduction to basic principles of mechanics of materials.
Program
1 - Static equilibrium, Linear members; Materials chracteristics: continuous, homogeneous and isotropic; Concept of force; Hipostatic, isostatic and hyperstatic structures; Equations of static equilibrium;
2 - Properties of surfaces and bodies. First moment of area and centroid. Transfer theorem (Steiner).
3 - Stress and Deformation: Uniaxial tension, normal stress and strain. Shear stress and shear strain. Stress strain relationship. Bidimensional stress states: principal stress and strain;
4 - Torsion: Shear stresses; Torsion of solid circular bar and tubes.
5 -Bending: Simple beam formulation. Strees strain relationships in planar bending. Properties of cross sections – centroid and moment of inertia. Biaxial bending ( My, Mz) and combined bending ( N, Mb), ( N, Mb, Mt). Shear stresses due to shear forces in cross section. Deflections in Bending – Beam deflection differential equation.
6 - Structural safety: Resistance of cross sections. Failure criterium. Limit states design methods.
