Objectives
- Understand the social, intellectual, economic and technical issues concerning digital repositories;
- Analyse on-line libraries and archives;
- Design and develop a digital library using a digital library system.
- Use a multimedia archive from the archivist and the archive manager perspectives;
- Understand digital text, image, audio and video formats as well as the digitization processes;
- Use digital description, interchange and preservation standards.

Key features of a digital repository.
Usability interface. Research tools. Organization of information. Updating facilities.
Designing and developing a digital library using a digital library system (Greenstone).
Using a multimedia archive (Metamedia) from the perspective of the archivist and the archive manager.
Digital archive management and preservation. INTERPARES and Interpares2 projects. Description standards and requirements. ISO 15489 and the MoReq Specification. EAD (Encoded Archival Description).

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical classes shall consist of lectures with reference to the bibliography.
In practical classes, proposed research topics shall be discussed with the students, practical coursework on digital libraries and archives shall be carried out and corresponding results presented.
