Objectives
1- BACKGROUND - The class of machine design is destinated to teach our students the basic concepts for their future activity as a desgin or project engineer
2- SPECIFIC AIMS
Concept and design of a mechanical engineering small project
3- PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE
Mechanics; Materials; Mathmatics;...
4- PERCENTUAL DISTRIBUTION
100% of work performed by the student
5- LEARNING OUTCOMES
The student must be able to develop the concept and to perform the design of a mechanical engineering system. He must be able to do it in autonomous way.
Program
Basic design of gear speed reducers; kinematics and essential structure design; selection of the reduction stage number; design and calculation of gears (parallel, concurrent and worm type); design of shafts considering maximum stress and fatigue; development of mechanical systems (a theme is proposed to each student; usually for one student; may be developped by a group up to two students). Each session lasts for three hours once a week

Teaching methods and learning activities
The students receive orientation from the superviser during the teaching year; their mission is to develope the proposed theme. The objectives are reached when they are able to present a set of technical drawings where the system is conveniently detailed and can be uderstood for construction. At the same time, the student should also include in his work all the calculations justifying the technical soluions he adothed to solve tyhe project theme.

Observations
This class is very useful in the global menu because it offers to the student the possibility of including in its development a consideravble amount of knowledge from other areas, like materials science, applied mechanics, mathematics and (not less important) task management techniques
