Objectives

Objectives:
- To receive and integrate the new coming students.
- To introduce the most important services
- To teach “Soft Skills” and to stress their importance (soft skills: team work, communication, etc)
- To discuss a scientific theme/ project

Learning Outcomes:
RES_1: To know FEUP and to use its services, such as: CICA, SICC, SERAC, SDI.
RES_2: To have communication skills (report, oral presentation and poster)
RES_3: To have research skills and to be organized
RES_4: To have team work skills: to make part of a team, to be assessed; to have flexible interpersonal relationships; to have the ability to interiorize and respect group rules
RES_5: To reach the specific aims of the Theme/Project.

Note: Further down is explained how each of theses results are assessed

Programme

Specific training on non technical skills:
• Writing in engineering
• Effective Communication
• Visual Communication

Specific topics include: Ethics, plagiarism, quotation styles, etc.

Additionally:
•Campus' Information System
•Effective Learning

The course also includes team work about a specific topic within the scope of the program the student was accepted in.

At the end of the project, the group must:
- Use a Logbook – either on sheets of paper or based on a web technology
- Write a technical/scientific report
- Create a poster
- Prepare an oral presentation and defend the theme (Theme/Project related to the degree).

Teaching methods and learning activities

The training for this course will last a week.
There will be training sessions about report writing, oral presentations and how to create a poster. Each of the training sessions is divided into two parts: theoretical and practical. At the end of the first week each of these areas will be independently assessed.
The professors chosen to supervise Project FEUP will suggest Themes/Projects, which can be divided into two different tasks. Each of these tasks will be given to a group of 6 students that will be guided by a FEUP student.
Each group make a project about a theme. During the project a logbook must be used. At the end, a scientific report, a poster and an oral presentation will be assessed. The oral presentations will have to be presented in front of a jury at a conference called: “Congresso FEUP”. The project will be presented and defended in two parallel sessions.
The content of the presentation, poster as well as the defence of the project (jury questions/audience) will be assessed.

Type of assessment

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Description Type Time (Hours) Weight (%) End date
Attendance (estimated) Participação presencial 918,00
Mid Term Test Exame 1,00 2010-09-24
Total: - 0,00

Calculation formula of final grade

Assessment formula:

- 100% - Final Mark- (15% Individual Training Grade) + (85% Individual Project/Theme Grade)
- 15%- Individual Training Grade = (5% Practical Part- Training) + (10% Test);
- 85%- Individual Project/Theme Grade = 85% Group Project/Theme Grade + 85% Individual Offset
- 85% - Group Project/Theme Grade = (40% Report) + (20% Poster) + (25% Presentation);
- 85% - Individual Offset = Individual performance in the team

Note: 85% Individual Offset- Individual performance in the team. The grade is set by the supervisor based on the assessment given by the peers and information collected by the mentor. Generally, the total of the Individual Offset for all of the people in the group is zero.

Assessment Matrix:

Theme/Project Report: RES_2 +RES_5
Oral Presentation: RES_2 + RES_5
Poster: RES_2 + RES_5
Assessment by the peers: RES_3 + RES_4
Assessment by the mentors: RES_1 + RES_3 + RES_4
Assessment by the supervisors: RES_2 + RES_3 + RES_5

Examinations

See other fields.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Mini Test (MidTerm) and Group Work are mandatory.

Missing classes with valid written justification - if applicable, redistribute to other similar items, if impossible, redistribute to TeamWork grade

Miss MT - if applicable go to another call, if impossible, redistribute to TeamWork grade
