Objectives
Objective: Present electromagnetism as a unifying model of many phenomena which are observed in nature and used in the technologies.
Skills and learning outcomes
- Problem solving skills, acquaintance with the mathematical tools and the mathematical language used in electromagnetism and subsequent courses.
- Physical intuition and conceptual problem solving skills in electromagnetism.
- Team work skills, the capacity and discipline to work continuously during the semester and an attitude of respect of ethical values, for example respect for colleagues and honesty.
Program
1. Charge and electric current
2. Electrostatics
3. Magnetostatics
4. Electrodynamics
5. DC and AC circuits
6. Electromagnetics in matter
7. Electromagnetic waves

Teaching methods and learning activities
In this course no distinction is made between lecture and recitation classes.
Lectures/recitation classes: presentation by the lecturer of concepts; their illustration by solving key problems; problem solving by students under the supervision of the lecturer; laboratory experiments; in special pre-defined dates the distributed evaluation will take place; during 30min and at the beginning of the class.
Moodle site: power-point presentations of the lectures, multimedia resources, problem sheets, self-evaluation tests, general information of the course and evaluation results.
Office hours: personalized tutorship where doubts on the theory and applications are clarified.

Eligibility for exams
The following conditions are required to attain frequency:
- Miss a maximum of six recitation classes;
- Obtain a final mark of ten (10) or above in the distributed evaluation (DE).
The distributed evaluation DE consists in:
- 4 mini-tests (30 min). Each mini-test consist in problems from the set of problems that was previously solved in the theoretical lectures or recitation lectures -- weight 80%) and in two multiple choice questions (weight 20%);
- Test with exam format.
- two laboratory tests in pre-defined dates.
In the computation of the final DE mark only the 3 best mini-tests, the best laboratory and the test are used. The DE mark is the average of the previous five items.
The frequency conditions presented above are optional for the students under the conditions presented in General Grading Rule (Art 4º, Nº 3).
Calculation formula of final grade
If EF >=8 then CF = 0.6 * DE + 0.4 * EF
If EF<8 then CF = EF
where CF is the final mark (0 to 20), DE is the distributed evaluation mark (0 to 20) and EF is the final exam mark (0 to 20).
Examinations or Special Assignments
n.a.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
For the students that during the present academic year have a working student or military statute both the frequency conditions and obligatory distributed evaluation are optional.
The students in the conditions described above and that have decided to opt out from the distributed evaluation scheme or decided not to use the previous academic year distributed evaluation mark are admitted to exam with the final mark given by the exam mark.
The students with the “dirigente associativo” statute cannot opt out from the distributed evaluation scheme.
Classification improvement
Through the “Recurso” exam, the final mark will be computed as:
CF = MAX (CFN, 0.6 * DE + 0.4 * R, R)
where CFN is the final mark in the “Épocal normal” (0 to 20), DE is the distributed evaluation mark (0 to 20) and R the “Recurso” exam mark (0 to 20).
Observations
Office hours: Wednesday, 8h30-10h00 and Thursday 13h30-15h00, office I317.
It is expected that students dedicate 4 to 6 hours of weekly study to the course, further to the normal attendance to the theoretical and recitation lectures.
Those students who have not attended a distributed evaluation test and have a justification accepted by the DEM/DEMM secretariat can do an extra test,
Any fraud attempt during the distributed evaluation process will lead to loss of frequency and non-admission to the final exam.
