Objectives
Introduction to structural safety evaluation and underlying principles. Presentation of methodologies based on the concept of probability of collapse.
Program
The problem of safety. Uncertainties in structural design. Coefficients of variation of actions and resistances. Methodologies for the assessment of safety. Safety and the design codes. Safety assessment with EC1, EC7 and EC8; Ultimate and serviceability limit states; Characteristic values; actions, action combinations and action effects; soil resistance parameters; tests and characteristic values according to the dimension of the zone affecting structural collapse. Probability of collapse; FOSM method; Monte Carlo method; multivariate approach. Reliability index and probability of collapse. Relation between probability of collapse and the Eurocodes. Applications: embankments on soft soil; direct foundations and earth retaining structures. Assessment of field and laboratory test results.
