Objectives
Understanding of the basic formulations for the analysis of linear systems under deterministic dynamic excitations.
Application to the analysis of the behaviour of Civil Engineering structures submitted to dynamic loads and, in particular, to the seismic analysis of building structures taking into account the present codes specifications.
Introduction to dynamic analysis under random excitations and to experimental structural dynamics.

Importance of Structural Dynamics in the context of Civil Engineering.
Models for dynamic analysis.
Single-degree-of-freedom systems. Equation of motion. Free vibration response. Response to a sinusoidal excitation. Analysis of the response to a general dynamic excitation using the Duhamel integral or Fourier series. Input-output relation in the frequency domain. Response to a base excitation. Experimental identification of the natural frequency and damping factor. Rayleigh method.
Multi-degree-of-freedom systems. Equations of motion. Analysis of the free vibration response. Natural frequencies and mode shapes. Orthogonality property. Rayleigh damping. Analysis of the response to a general dynamic input.
Method of modal superposition. Direct integration methods.
Idealization of different types of dynamic loads in Civil Engineering problems. Idealization of the seismic excitation. Concept of response spectrum. Seismic response analysis. Application of the Rayleigh method. Discussion of code specifications concerning the seismic analysis of building structures. Methodologies based on 2D and 3D structural models.
Introduction to Stochastic Structural Dynamics. Concept of power spectrum. Stochastic input-output relations of a single-degree-of-freedom linear system.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical lectures are used for the presentation of the main concepts and methodologies, duly complemented by the presentation of some applications, as well as of some experimental tests on physical models.
Practical lectures are essentially used go deeper inside the discussion and resolution of practical problems suggested in the theoretical lectures.
