Objectives
The students should have a clear understanding of the fundamental concepts of Total Quality Management together with the knowledge of its methods and techniques. A special emphasis is attributed to the problem-solving methodology and techniques, to the ISO 9000 standards and to the statistical process control.
Program
Basic Concepts: quality, quality control, quality assurance, quality systems, total quality management. Quality Management Systems: ISO 9000 standards, implementing quality systems. Quality costs: quality costs classification and evaluation. TQM Methodology: quality improvement, problem-solving methodology, continuos improvement planning, organisational aspects of TQM. TQM Techniques: data collection and analysis, check sheets, Pareto analysis, cause-and-effect diagrams, histograms, correlation and regression analysis, statistical inference, Shewart control charts, Cumulative Sum control charts. Designing with TQM: Quality Function Deployment (QFD), design review, Failure Mode and Effect Analysis. TQM on purchasing: quality purchasing policies, vendor relations, vendor audits, vendor ratings, product acceptance and inspection planning, acceptance sampling, MIL-STD-105D standard. TQM on manufacturing: process capability indexes, the concept of dominance, process control and inspection layout, quality information systems, quality improvement techniques, statistical process control.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical and practical classes. In the practical classes students must solve practical SPC problems. Some visits to industrial companies are also included in the teaching procedures.
