Objectives

The main objective of the course is to provide a framework for the usage of computers in the industrial automation area.

Program

PLC applications and advanced programming. Computers and Operating Systems. Embedded Systems. Severs and Clients. Industrial communications: point-to-point communications and industrial networking. Supervisory Control. SCADA Systems. HMI, Telemetry.

Main Bibliography

Several tutorial texts, proposed problems and lab guide sheets. These are written by the teaching staff covering most of the classes.

"The PLC Tutor" - Phil Melore
"Du Grafcet aux Reseaux de Petri" - David and Alla
"Novell Networking Primer" - Novell
"Telemetry and SCADA Handbook" - ScanData

Complementary Bibliography

"Communication networks for Manufacturing" - Pimentel
"Computer Networks" - Tanenbaum
"Operating Systems" - Tanenbaum
"Programmable Logic Controllers" - Webb

Teaching methods and learning activities

Two hours a week theoretical oriented classes serve explanation and tutorial purposes. Problem solving classes and hands-on lab classes illustrate the most important theoretical topics of the discipline, and put the students in contact with the industrial computing related technology.

Software

Several PLC programming packages, HMI programming software packages (OMRON and Siemens), Supervisory control (Citect).

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Eligibility for exams

As defined by FEUP legislation

Calculation formula of final grade
