Resumo (PT): Têm sido vários os estudos que investigam o potencial da Realidade Virtual (RV) no tratamento de doenças mentais. No contexto terapêutico, a RV contribui, essencialmente, para a criação de ambientes controlados. No entanto, a maioria das intervenções que utilizam RV limitam-se à estimulação audiovisual, excluindo outros sentidos que poderiam contribuir para uma maior imersão, aumentando o impacto do tratamento. Estudos recentes sugerem que incorporar estimulação olfativa invoca uma resposta emocional mais forte, intensificando os efeitos terapêuticos. Este estudo propõe diretrizes padronizadas para desenvolver a aplicação desta tecnologia e explorar o impacto da estimulação olfativa em ambientes de RV para tratamentos de saúde mental. Está previsto o desenvolvimento de um protótipo de RV multissensorial, com estimulação olfativa síncrona com a narrativa virtual. Utilizando uma abordagem experimental, serão integradas avaliações qualitativas e quantitativas, incluindo questionários e escalas validadas, medidas fisiológicas e feedback subjetivo em entrevistas individuais. A análise comparativa destes dados visa determinar se a estimulação olfativa afeta a imersão e resposta emocional dos utilizadores, o que será usado para criar as diretrizes para futuras intervenções terapêuticas com RV. Esta é a lacuna na investigação que o presente estudo procura preencher, consolidando dados concretos relativos à viabilidade e aos benefícios de integrar o olfato em experiências de RV aplicadas ao tratamento de doenças mentais.

Abstract (EN): There have been numerous explorations of the potential of Virtual Reality (VR) in the treatment of mental disorders. This is mainly done by providing a controlled environment for therapeutic interventions. Still, most interventions through VR are limited to audiovisual stimulation, excluding other senses, which could better enhance immersion and increase the effect of the treatment. Recent studies suggest that incorporating olfactory stimulation may evoke a deeper emotional response and intensify the therapeutic effects. This paper proposes a standardized framework for developing the technology and exploring the impact of olfactory stimulation in VR environments for mental health therapy. The production of a multisensorial VR prototype is planned, with olfactory stimulation synchronized with the virtual narrative. An experimental approach will be used, integrating qualitative and quantitative evaluations, including questionnaires measured against validated scales, physiological measurements, and subjective feedback from individual interviews. The comparative analysis of data will help determine whether olfactory stimulation affects the immersion and emotional response of users, which, in turn, can be used to create guidelines for future therapeutical VR interventions. This is the research gap that this study aims to address, by providing concrete evidence regarding the viability and benefits of integrating olfaction in VR with respect to mental health treatment.
