Erasmus+ Short PhD Mobility Program

Short PhD Mobility is a new type of Erasmus+ programme for doctoral students. It covers a short period of time (from 5 to 30 days), offering more flexibility and mobility adapted to the student's needs.

This type of mobility aims to provide the acquisition of specialized theoretical and/or practical knowledge and skills, the collection of research data, the exchange of collaborative research, the development of a more wide-ranging network of contacts in Europe and the possibility of finding post-doctoral opportunities.

For Short PhD Mobility, activities related to the theme or research of the thesis are eligible, such as visits to laboratories or research centers, participation in a training/workshop/summer school on a specific subject, attending seminars and lectures. Mobility for training in foreign languages is NOT accepted.

All 3rd cycle students who are regularly enrolled at FEUP during the period in which the application is completed and the mobility takes place, are eligible to apply. Mobility is only valid if the student attends at least 5 days of face-to-face mobility.

The training programmes carried out in this type of mobility may eventually assign ECTS credits to students. However, at FEUP, no credit is granted.

It is important to note that this mobility is registered in a Diploma Supplement and the student can also receive a certificate of participation provided by the organizing entity.

It is the student's responsibility to express their interest in taking part in a Short PhD Mobility by filling in our Google Forms at least a month and a half before the beginning of the mobility. Once registered, OUTGOING will create an application process in SIGARRA.

In order to formalise the application at FEUP, the doctoral candidate will have to submit the following mandatory documents:

. SIGARRA Application Form, submitted in SIGARRA and signed by the student, the PhD Programme Director and the Thesis Supervisor.
. Copy of a valid identification document (Citizen's Card or Passport).
. Copy of the Tax Identification Card (NIF).
. Proof of IBAN
. Copy of valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or proof of application for renewal.
. Declaration of student departure (internships or short-term mobility programmes) .
. Valid residence permit (only applicable to non-European students) .
. Visa for students from third countries (to be confirmed with the embassy of the country where the in-person component of the PIF will take place).

Afterwards, the application must be submitted in the destination institution website, within their deadline. There may be additional documents to present in the destination.

For this type of mobility, the Erasmus+ grant takes into account the number of days of face-to-face training attended by the student, plus 2 days travelling time. Financial management, as well as the scholarship contracts, are carried out by the International Relations Service (SRI) of the U.PORTO.

Students will only be contacted by the University on this matter once their application has been submitted on SIGARRA and validated by FEUP and UP.

See the estimated daily amount:

. between the 1st and 14th day: the grant is 79 euros;

. between the 15th and 30th day: the grant is 56 euros.

For more information on financial support, see the Erasmus+ Internships and short-term studies section.

Erasmus+ BIP Program

A Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) is a new mobility format under the Erasmus+ program, offering an intensive and interdisciplinary course that combines a physical and online sessions. The aim is to promote innovative teaching and learning methods, focusing on research and knowledge acquisition through challenging tasks.

With its innovative and inclusive structure, BIPs provide an additional opportunity for mobility, especially for students who cannot undertake a long-term mobility (such as a semester or academic year).

BIPs are developed and implemented through a consortium comprising a minimum of three higher education institutions (HEIs) from at least three EU Member States and third countries associated with the Erasmus+ program, which provides funding for these courses.

During a BIP, students will engage in a short-term physical mobility experience abroad, lasting between 5 and 30 days, coupled with a mandatory virtual component that facilitates collaborative learning and teamwork.

Whenever a new BIP related to the field of Engineering arises, OUTGOING will distribute information via dynamic email. In some cases, a faculty member from FEUP may handle the dissemination to students in related programs.

Individual student applications are not accepted without prior approval from OUTGOING, as it is necessary to establish an interinstitutional agreement and ensure funding availability for the grant. Once mobility is approved by OUTGOING, the student must inform the Mobility Coordinator of their course degree, who will need to sign the Application Form.

These BIPs are open to students at any level of study who are regularly enrolled at FEUP during the application process and the mobility period. Also, the mobility is only valid if the student participates in at least 5 days of in-person training. If a BIP has a longer duration and the student cannot be present during the in-person component, they must contact OUTGOING to determine if the mobility can proceed.

BIPs must provide a minimum of three ECTS credits to students. However, at FEUP, no credit transfer is applicable. It's worth noting that this mobility is recorded in the Diploma Supplement, and students may receive a participation certificate issued by the organizing entity.

Below are the mandatory documents required to formalize a BIP application at FEUP:

. SIGARRA Application Form, submitted at SIGARRA and signed by the student and the Mobility Coordinator of the program.
. Copy of a valid ID document (Citizen Card or Passport).
. Copy of the Taxpayer Card (NIF).
Proof of IBAN.
. Copy of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), valid or proof of renewal application.
. Students OUT Declaration (Internship and Short Mobilities Programmes).
Valid Residence Permit (applicable only to non-European students).
. Visa for national students from third countries (to be confirmed with the embassy of the country where the in-person BIP component will take place).
Afterwards, the application must be formalized with the organizing entity of the BIP within the designated timeframe. Additional documents may be required for submission at the destination.

For this type of mobility, the Erasmus+ grant is determined by the number of days of in-person training completed by the student, plus 2 days for travel. Financial management, as well as grants contracts, are handled by the U.PORTO International Relations ‘Office. Students will only be contacted by U.PORTO on this matter after the application has been submitted at FEUP and validated by both FEUP and U.PORTO.

Here's the expected daily grant rate:

. between the 1st and the 14th day: ¤79

. between the 15th and the 30th day: ¤56

For more information on financial support, please check our FAQs from the Internship and Short Mobilities page on SIGARRA.

European Doctoral Title

Under the U.Porto European Doctoral Degree Regulations, students enrolled in a FEUP Doctoral Programme have the possibility of carrying out a period of research in a European Higher Education Institution that they select for this purpose, and request, at the end of the doctorate and associated with the U.Porto doctoral degree, that associated title which will confirm that part of the doctoral thesis was carried out in a European institution.

In order for this period to be recognised through this title, the research period to be spent at the European HEI must last at least 3 months, and a research agreement - "Research Work Plan" - must be signed with the destination institution BEFORE the mobility takes place, according to the model approved by U.Porto*.

This is a mobility situation similar to the one that takes place within the scope of other exchange programmes, in which the student will normally be exempt from paying tuition fees at the host institution and will not obtain any degree from the European institution of destination.

Procedures

The doctoral student (or their doctoral supervisor) must ensure contact with the partner institution, but the process for checking, approving and signing the "Research Work Plan (RWP)" (*the RWP model approved by U.Porto can be requested via email to international@fe.up.pt), to be established/signed with the partner institution BEFORE the mobility, must be submitted via COOP, delivering the research agreement, completed and signed by the respective doctoral student, supervisor and director of the Doctoral Programme. COOP will take care of obtaining the signature of the Director of FEUP.
