Doctoral Program in Sustainable Energy Systems

Promoted by FEUP in cooperation with FCUL, ISEG, IST and the Univeristy of Coimbra, together with the MIT, the PhD program consists in one curricular year (60 ECTS) and three years of research leading to a dissertation (180 ECTS) and grants the degree of Doctor in Sustainable Energy Systems.

TARGET STUDENTS: • Graduates in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering or in other areas since recognized as relevant by the scientific committee of the program.

Objectives

The objective of the Doctoral program in Sustainable Energy Systems is training and educating top-quality researchers, capable of analyzing and designing energy systems, considering their technological, environmental, economic and social dimensions. At the end of the course, they must be capable of autonomous research work, be it in the academic environment, in the industry environment or in a mixed environment. It is therefore intended that the doctoral student can continue to develop its knowledge and work in a way that created clear added value for the society.

Professional Abilities

The doctoral program in Sustainable Energy systems intends to researchers able to propose, promote and perform R&D in Energy Systems, including the components of demand, supply and transport, with a sustainability perspective.

It is expected that by the end of the study cycle the students have a profound understanding of the energy conversion chains, of the  concept of sustainability in its environmental, economic and social dimensions, and capabilities of modeling and analyzing energy systems or significant components of these.

Employment Prospects

Research, Development and Dissemination activities at R&D institutions of the Energy area;

Advanced consultancy in companies developing activity in the Energy area.

Comments

The main research centres associated with the PDSSE are the INESC-Porto and the INEGI.
INESC-Porto coordinates the” Laboratório Associado” INESC-TEC, and has the USE (Unit for Energy Systems) as its unit with the biggest connection to the PDSSE. This unit is based the FEUP campus, and develops its activity in emerging areas for the electrical sector: regulation and electricity markets, integration of disperse generation,
technical and economic management od distributions systems, use of GIS and other Its, risk management, etc. It is classified by the FCT as Excellent.
INEGI is alo located at the FEUP campus, and cooperates with the PDSSE through the Unit of Advanced Studies in the Built Environment, which develops its activity in the areas of indoor environment, energy in buildings and urban systems. It is part of the LEATA Associated laboratory and is classified by the FCT with “Very Good”.
