Objectives

General Objectives: To give the basic notions of the mechanical behaviour of composite materials and its specificities. To introduce the concepts and theories associated with design of composite systems and structures. To introduce the specific processing techniques and basic concepts of quality control.

Specific Aims: To acquaint the students with the specificity of Composite Systems, their anisotropic nature and the ability to tailor their properties. To introduce ceramic and metallic based composite systems and compare them with polymeric matrix composites.

Learning outcomes and competences

Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course, the students are expected:
- to know the main matrix and reinforcement materials, as well as the semi-products for the production of composite systems;
- to identify the main parameters of manufacturing processes and to be able to make a selection and evaluation of technologies;
- to conceive and design simple products based on composite systems;
- to be able to prepare a quality control procedure for those systems.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

The students are expected to have knowledge of properties and processing technologies related to polymeric materials, as well as backgroung on Solid Mechanics, in particular the generalized Hooke's law.
