Objectives

The development of the Master Thesis should take into account the following skills:
- Acquire knowledge in a particular area of Civil Engineering, using the research activity, innovation or development of professional skills;
- Ability to integrate knowledge, handle complex issues, develop solutions and make judgments in situations of limited or incomplete information, including reflections on the implications and ethical and social responsibilities that result from those solutions and those judgments;

Program

The thesis program defines the objectives, the tasks and the schedule for all the semester. This program is proposed by the thesis supervisor and should be approved by the Director of the Course after consulting the Scientific Committee.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:
The syllabus intends to complete a specific training in the scientific area corresponding of the specialization and to present the latest developments. From a set of proposed work plans, which reflect the FEUP capabilities in this area, the work plan for each student will meet his profile and the resources availability, being proposed by the Supervisor and approved by the Director of the study cycle after consulting the Scientific Committee. Student supervision is provided by the supervisor who is responsible for monitor his progress and guide him. The result of the work done by each student is presented as a report with the first draft of the thesis and will be discussed in a public examination by a jury. If he is approved the student will sent the final version of the thesis immediately after the public discussion, taking into account the corrections specified by the jury.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The preparation of the thesis must be supervised by a PhD teacher or PhD researcher from the University of Porto, or by a PhD or specialist of recognized merit by the Scientific Council of FEUP. The supervisor and, if it exists, the co-supervisor will be approved by the Director of the Course, after consulting the Scientific Committee.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
With this curricular students end the academic course, therefore it is intended that future professionals are highly qualified, endowed with knowledge, skills and competences in their area of specialization. Thus, these professionals should be able to solve challenges and problems in a structured and rigorous and deal with civil engineering problems multidisciplinary, framing them in the respective scientific-technical, economic, social and environmental contexts. Being able to communicate in a rational manner the results of their work to the technical community and society in general, enhance the leadership skills, entrepreneurship and teamwork, taking into account the different economic and international competitiveness.
