At the end of this curricular unit, the student should be able to:
• Describe and identify the applicability of embedded systems;
• Specify functional requirements for a given application;
• Select the appropriate hardware;
• Conceive, design and implement hardware interfaces;
• Program microcontrollers;
• Implement and test solutions for command, control and/or monitoring mechatronic systems.
Students should have basic knowledge of electrical circuits.
Embedded systems: architecture and application fields. Use of embedded systems for command, control and monitoring of mechatronic systems. Microcontroller based systems. Internal microcontroller architecture. Communication Interfaces with external devices. Communication protocols and standards. Design of hardware interfaces. Programming. Specification, design and implementation of embedded systems based on microcontrollers.
The curricular unit has two types of classes: theoretical and practical classes. The theoretical classes are devoted to the exposition of the course subjects and discussion of practical cases, supported by audio visual media. Subjects are learned by students through complementary study and conceptualization activities. The practical classes comprise the design and implementation of solutions for command, control and / or monitoring of mechatronic systems, based on microcontrollers, in the field of automation.

Frequency requires minimum attendance to the practical classes.
For ordinary students, the final classification is based on two written exams (PE1 and PE2). These exams are evaluated 0-20 and have the following weights:
PE1 - individual written exam, without consultation, to be held in the middle of the semester (November 2014.) - 50% of the final grade;
PE2 - individual written exam, without consultation, to be held at the end of the semester (January 2015.) - 50% of the final grade.
PE1 and PE2 are expected to last for 2h.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- Approval requires minimum classification of 7.0 in the exams (PE1 and PE2). Thus, students who have an average classification in the exams greater or equal to 9.5 but do not meet the minimum classification will be assigned a final grade of 9.0.
- Students who miss a written exam will be assigned a classification of 0 in that exam.
- Students not meeting the criterion of minimum attendance to the practical classesdo not have access to the written exams PE1 and PE2 (except for students who, according to the rules of FEUP, enjoy a special status that exempt them of the minimum attendance criterion).Not applicable.
Not applicable.
Students with special status may choose to attend the curricular unit as if they were ordinary students, having the correspondent assessment rules. Alternatively, students must do a single written exam (50%) and an oral exam (50%). However, to access the oral exam, the students must have a classification, in the writing exam, greater or equal to 7.0.
Students who wish to improve their grades may opt for a partial or a global assessment.
In the case of partial assessment, the students may choose to repeat, at the time of appeal, one (and only one) written exam (PE1 or PE2). The final grade is obtained according to the stated in the "Calculation formula of final grade", being kept for this purpose the classification of the other exam.
In the case of the overall assessment students must do a single written exam (50%) and an oral exam (50%). However, to access the oral exam, the students must have a classification, in the writing exam, greater or equal to 7.0.
