This curricular unit aims to give the students the opportunity to develop and integrate a complex system in an environment that closely resembles what they will find in real-life business. The system must comply with the engineering requirements that are extracted from the end user functional requirements for the application.
At the end of this unit the the following learning outcomes are expected:
• development of skills that enable establishing engineering requirements and specifications from the desired functional description
• perform a market survey of products that meet the functional description and look for innovations that may differentiate the proposed solution
• teamwork participation
• auto-evaluation as a member of a tem.
Each year a system is chosen and developed with the integration of several sub-systems.
Students are organized in groups that contribute for the development of the system prototype. Each group as a designated tutor.
Relevant technical areas for the system development are covered in tutorial theoretical sessions.
Project requirements and specifications, project management, project evaluation and quality control are other subjects related to teamwork skills that are also treated in theoretical sessions.
Handouts from the teachers.
Theoretical classes are used, in accordance to an established plan, for tutorial presentations of global relevance (topics on technical areas important to the project and topics related to teamwork and project management skills).
Lab sessions are used for project development work and also for meetings within the group and with the group tutor. This last meeting should occur once a week in order to keep track of the work done and identify possible difficulties.
Each group must have a place (preferably a site) with a repository of all group documents, that should include at least the following: meeting agendas and meeting minutes with the decisions taken and work distribution amongst the group; all documents produced during the project indicating the date and version).

Students evaluation will take into account all the work along the semetre, the evaluation of the prototype developed and all documents produced including the final deliverable.
The following items are considered for the group evaluation:
A - Technology choice and justification: emphsis is givenn to: a) market survey quality; b) technology comparison ans selection with relevance product evolution possibilities, low cost and scalability; c) innovations presented in comparison to systems already implemented.
B - Performance: at the final presentation a group performance ranking will be established based on predefined evaluation criteria.
C - Global quality: quality of the final presentation as well as all technical documentation produced are considered in this item.
All students must participate but some flexibility is possible regarding the meetings schedule.
No mechanism is foreseen to improve the final grade.
