This course aims to introduce the fundamental concepts of digital audio and video, compressed digital technologies used in television, TV diffusion and distribution networks, technologies of TV production, concepts of interactive TV and 3DTV.
At the end of the course students will be able to:
-understand the basics in the digital representation and compression of audio and video signals used in television;
-identify the components of a television distribution system, the features offered by each, as well as various implementation alternatives;
-know the different alternatives for implementing a digital television distribution service (via broadcast, cable, satellite, IPTV, OTA, fixed versus mobile broadcast);
-be able to identify the characteristics that components of the television service should have to satisfy identified requirements (to select formats; type and degree of compression to be used; type of additional information needed; transmission infrastructure; transmission parameters; protocols).
-be familiar with the various international standards that are used in television and digital cinema, from media compression and metadata, through formatting to modulations, ciphers and protocols.
Introduction to the digital audio and video codification norms used in television Transmission of digital television: air, satellite and cable. Convergence of information technology, telecommunications and television Digital System (Contents) New digital services: interaction and high definition Transition in different countries.
Generic vision of a digital television system - the necessary components from production up to the Subscriber; the most important aspects and technologies used. Part 1 - audio and Video Compression. Audiovisual digital sources (formats, resolutions, color spaces, etc.); principles of audiovisual signals compression; Introduction to coding standards of digital audio and video used in television. Brief insight into the MPEG-2 video and audio and AVC/H.264/MPEG4-10.
2nd part - digital television Transmission. Dissemination via air, satellite and cable. The convergence of information technologies, telecommunications and TV on the side of production and distribution; file-based production and IPTV. Digital content annotation systems. The new digital services: interaction and stereoscopic support. The future of television.
Classes will be based on the presentation and demonstration of technology. Laboratory classes will be based on practical assignments, so that students can apply and deepen their knowledge. The laboratory assignments consist mainly in the development of programs in MatLab or C language for image processing, audio and video. In particular, programs that implement operations on the audiovisual signals that typically exist in digital TV systems, such as quantization, spatial transform, motion compensation or entropy encoding.
