Objectives

This course unit aims at providing an integrated qualitative and quantitative vision of operations management in organizations, namely in what concerns the concepts, techniques and strategies generally used in practice.

Students should be able to know and understand the key concepts, methodologies, techniques and tools generally considered within the Operations Management. It is also an objective of the course to develop the capacity of analysis (qualitative and quantitative) and problem solving capabilities within the Operations Management context.

Learning outcomes and competences

The students should be able to: 

Obj1 - identify and explain the different competitive priorities in operations;

Obj2 - describe the role of operations strategy in the competitiveness of organizations;

Obj3 - describe and explain the different types of organizations and production systems;

Obj4 - describe and explain the main approaches, methods and tools in operations management (e.g., MRP, MRP-II. Scheduling, …);

Obj5 - choose and use the main techniques and tools in operations.

Obj6 - Understand, explain and develop the so-called “lean” approaches when applied to operations.

C2 - scope and activities in operations management: industrial and service companies;

C3 - characterization and organization of production processes and flows (production models, layouts, etc.)

C4 - procedures and methodologies for planning, executing and controlling production activities;

C5 - materials management, MRP, and MRP-II;

C6 - operations sequencing and scheduling;

C7 - “lean thinking” and the Toyota Production System; flow production; fundamentals of internal logistics;

C8 - technological support to operations management

Teaching methods and learning activities

1. Fundamental concepts are introduced in classes and discussed with the students, along with the presentation of examples of real applications and the resolution of  exercises;

2. Study of real cases in Operations Management;

3. Accomplishment of assignments by groups of students;

4. Regular accomplishment of individual assignments.

Type of evaluation: Distributed evaluation with final exam

Weighted average of the following components:

- participation of the student in classes (both lectures and recitations): 15%

- individual assignments: 10%

- group assignments: 15%

- final exam: 60%

 

To be approved in the course unit, the student must reach the following minimum thresholds:

- participation of the student in classes: minimum 50%

- final exam: minimum 40%

- individual assignments: minimum 40%

- group assignments: minimum 40%

Examinations or Special Assignments

- individual homework

- group analysis of short cases

Classification improvement

- only the wrtitten exam component can be improved
