a) To present a detailed description of the basic concepts of Classic Mechanics and Thermodynamics with a special emphasis on the most essential aspects, trying to develop intuition and reasoning;b) To introduce the necessary mathematical tools; c) To develop the ability to apply mathematics to problems of the real world of physics and engineering; d) To include examples of application in order to show the results
Students who successfully complete this course will:
1- be capable of explaining basic concepts and physical phenomena using appropriate vocabulary in two different areas of Physics: Classic Mechanics and Thermodynamics.
2- be able to use the laws governing the basic phenomena of these 2 areas to calculate relevant physical quantities.
3- be capable to show how the referred concepts explain phenomena observed in everyday life, and how they apply to engineering problems.
4- be capable of team work in solving problems and also be able to solve problems independently.
Prerequisites: vector, differencial and integral calculus.
Corequisites: ordinary diferential equations.
I- CLASSIC MECHANICS
1- Introduction to Physics. Units, physical quantities and systems of measurement
2- Vectors and vector calculus
3- Newton’s laws of motion and applications
4- Work, energy and energy conservation
5- Systems of particles and linear and angular momentum conservation laws
6- Motion, and static equilibrium of rigid bodies
II- THERMODYNAMICS
7- Temperature, thermal properties and thermal processes
8- Heat and the first law of thermodynamics
9- Kinetic theory of gases
10- Second law of thermodynamics and entropy
- Classes will be based on the presentation, discussion and problem solving of the themes of the course. Experimental demonstrations will be performed when possible.

a) To be admited to the exam, is necessary to fulfill the following two criteria:
1st criteria - achieve a grade ≥ 8,0 in the continuous assessment (CA) component.
2nd criteria - have a maximum of 3 unattended TP classes.
b) It is not need to attend TP classes in case of having a sucessefull CA component from the previous year. Then the student can not officially enroll in TP classes. It is possible to attend the TP classes if the room ocupation admits it.
c) Students with a special status (working students, military personnel) do not need to take the CA component. Their assessment will be based on a final exam, if they do not officially enroll in TP classes. However, students can opt to take the CA component, which is irreversible.
d) Those wich not fulfill a) can only do the recurso exam. Their grade will be the one obtained in such exam.
e) STUDENTS HAVE TO ACHIEVE A MINIMUM GRADE OF 8,0 IN THE EXAM TO COMPLETE THE COURSE.
MN = 0,55*E + 0,45*CA
MN – Mark in the normal season
E - Exam
CA - Continuous Assessment: consists of two multiple choice quizzes, or the CA mark obtained in the previous year.
Continuous Assessment:
- 1st test (T1) weighs 30%of CA (date to be determined).
- 2nd test (T2) weighs 70% (date to be determined).
Each of these tests has a duration of 1h30m and consists of multiple choice quiz.
Total mark in CA = 0.3*T1 + 0.7*T2
In any test is only alowed to have a pen and identification document. It is strictly forbiden the use of mobile phones or any other comunication device.
They only need to attend the final exam. The mark obtained in this exam is will be the final mark.
Students can opt to take the CA component, which is an irreversible option.
The mark at recurso season is calculated by,
M = MAX (MN, 0.45*CA + 0.55*R, R)
R - Recurso exam mark.
Average weekly working time estimated out of classes: about 10 hours per week.
