Objectives
This course aims to acquaint students with knowledge on the hydraulics field, that they did not have the chance to learn in the course of General Hydraulics. This course aims to acquaint students with hydraulic and structural dimensioning (dam work), stream derivation (strategies), and environmental issues regarding construction.
At the end of the course, students should be prepared to take part of a design, surveying and construction team for hydraulic works and hydroplants.
Learning Outcomes
Advanced engineering fundamental knowledge (Sciences of Engineering)

DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:
This curricular unit covers the topics on hydroplants, interventions in rivers, which are essential to the preparation of civil engineering professionals highly qualified to deal with these issues at the level of conception, design, implementation and monitoring of interventions.
Teaching methods and learning activities
Each topic of the course program is presented focusing on fundamental theoretical issues based on practical approaches, associated with the application of the various subjects. The theoretical sessions are complemented with the resolution of practical problems. This experience of resolving specific cases of application allows students to better integrate the different analyzed areas. Visits to existing hydraulic plants already build and, if possible, to others under construction. It is also planned a research work performed by groups of students.
DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The used teaching methodologies allow to deal with main themes related to fluvial works and hydroplants, analysis, discussion and critical interpretation of results, emphasizing the potential of writing communication, problem formulation and certification.
Evaluation Type
Distributed evaluation with final exam
Eligibility for exams
According to General Evaluation Rules of FEUP.
Calculation formula of final grade
Final exam weights 100% of the final mark
A written exam that is divided into two parts: theoretical part (closed book exam) that will last one hour, and practical part (open book exam) that will last two hours.
Examinations or Special Assignments
Students have to do some practical assignments in practical classes
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
Internal FEUP rules will be accomplished.
SPECIAL RULES FOR MOBILITY STUDENTS:
Proficiency in Portuguese and/or English;
Previous attendance of introductory graduate courses in the scientific field addressed in this module;
Evaluation by exam and/or coursework(s) defined in accordance with student profile.
