Objectives

This course aims to act as a revision course in the branch of Applied Mechanics, and it also aims to teach students how to materialize an engineering project.
To acquaint students with the norms of a metallic structure project
To acquaint students with CAE tools

Program

1- Type of structures and stability requirements; Isostatic and hyperstatic structures: trussed frames and portal frames, etc; Bracing requirements in industrial and office buildings; Definition of windbracing;
2- Principles of structural design - Allowable stress design , limit state design and strength and serviceability limit states; Definition of structural loads: wind loads, snow loads, seismic loads, etc; Relevant load combination rules ;
3- Structure analysis; Automatic calculation of reticulated and articulated structures; Structure modelling of resistant sections and different load systems; Analysis of beam stress and resistance of different components; Analysis and development of windbracing systems;
4- Dimensioning the resistant section- Regulamento de Estruturas de Aço para Edifícios (REAE) - (Portuguese regulation for steel structures of buildings) and EC3; Classification of sections according to Eurocode 3 (EC3)
4.1- Beams under axial compression (REAE, MV103 and EC3); Stability control regarding the final stage of buckling: REAR criteria, Spanish norm MV103 and EC3;
4-2- Stability and design of composite beams used in trussed frames; Buckling length in portal frames
5- Girder design; Girder stability in PRS profiles (welded reconstituted profiles); Lateral buckling on open section girders
6- (REAE, MV103 and EC3) Critical stress in plates; core instability in PRS profiles (welded reconstituted profiles); interaction formulas related with simultaneous normal and tangential stress; stiffness of horizontal and vertical rib
7- Bolted connections and welded structures; beam to column connection; beam to beam connection; truss design, knots and connections (windbracing and portal frames beams. Column and pillar design.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical-practical classes will be based on the presentation of the themes of the course and complemented with examples.
At the same time, students will be ask to do an assignment on structural mechanics, which will be supervised by the professor during the semester.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Eligibility for exams

During the semester students will be asked to do an assignment, which should be done using concepts and methodologies learned in classes. (40% of the Final Mark)
Admission to exams: assignment + 75% of class attendance

Calculation formula of final grade

Assignment- 40% of the Final Mark
Exam- 60% of the Final Mark

Examinations or Special Assignments

During the semester students will be asked to do an assignment, which should be done using concepts and methodologies learned in class.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

A practical assignment (40% of the Final Mark) and a written exam (60% of the Final Exam)
